1047 Games has announced significant changes to its popular free first-person shooter, Splitgate 2, including a return to beta status and a new wave of layoffs. The studio, co-founded by Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, shared these developments in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 22, 2023. The decision comes after substantial player feedback highlighted the need for revisions in the game.
In their message, the co-founders acknowledged that while they had ambitious plans for Splitgate 2, they recognized that they had “bit off more than we could chew.” They stated, “We’ve heard your feedback, and we agree with you.” The studio plans to focus on rebuilding core elements of the game to enhance the experience that players expect, which includes reworking progression systems, increasing the number of portals on maps, simplifying monetization strategies, and reintroducing classic game modes.
Community-Centric Development Approach
Proulx emphasized a shift towards community involvement in the game’s development. “Now more than ever, we need your help,” he noted. The studio intends to adopt a more participatory approach, incorporating player insights and playtesting into the development process. “We’re returning not just to our roots in what we build, but in how we build it – with you,” the statement elaborated. Plans for increased playtests and surveys aim to ensure that player voices are integral to future updates.
To facilitate these changes, the company is undergoing another round of layoffs, just one month after a previous staff reduction in June. The announcement described the decision as “incredibly difficult,” stating, “This is heartbreaking. These are our teammates and our friends, and they helped build what we have today.” Affected employees will receive severance packages and job placement support, with the hope of re-engaging them in the future.
Future Plans and Server Shutdown
In a bid to streamline operations and focus resources, 1047 Games will also shut down the original Splitgate servers next month. This decision aims to preserve as many positions as possible while the studio works on the upcoming Chapter 3 of Splitgate 2.
GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to 1047 Games for details regarding the number of layoffs from the previous round in June and the anticipated figures for the current wave. The studio remains committed to ensuring that the new version of the game reflects the community’s desires and expectations while navigating these challenging times.
