The highly anticipated Na Wahine O Ke Kai World Championship commenced today at 8 a.m. from Hale O Lono Harbor in Molokai, Hawaii. This prestigious event is set to conclude at Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu, where top crews are expected to finish around 1:45 p.m.. Participants from various regions are competing in one of the most significant long-distance paddling competitions in the world.
In addition to paddling, a full schedule of sporting events is taking place today across Hawaii. The Big West women’s soccer match features UC Santa Barbara facing off against Hawaii at 4 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The local community is gearing up for a vibrant atmosphere as fans come out to support their teams.
Looking ahead to Monday, the Intercollegiate League of Hawaii (ILH) will host a girls’ bowling event at 4:15 p.m. at the Hickam Bowling Center. Simultaneously, volleyball matches will showcase teams from various high schools, including Damien and ‘Iolani II, starting at 6 p.m..
The University of Hawaii also hosted the Anuenue Invitational tennis tournament this weekend at the UH Tennis Complex. Notable performances included Makeilah Nepomuceno defeating Evi Roobol with scores of 7-5, 6-3. The tournament featured multiple matches, with several other athletes from the University of Hawaii also showcasing strong performances.
In soccer, the PACWEST results from Saturday included a men’s match where Dominican defeated Chaminade 1-0, with Rolando Gonzalez scoring the only goal just under three minutes into the match. The women’s teams also competed, with Dominican securing a 2-1 victory over Chaminade.
The ILH Girls Varsity Volleyball matches on Saturday were equally competitive, with ‘Iolani defeating Punahou in three straight sets: 25-15, 25-16, 28-26. The girls’ Junior Varsity II teams also saw action, where ‘Iolani took down Le Jardin after dropping the first set.
In kayaking, the second sprint regatta at the Ala Wai Canal saw Cole Schwake from Mid-Pacific come in first in the boys’ varsity category with a time of 48.62 seconds. Lynne Kato of Mid-Pacific led the girls’ varsity with a time of 1:04.00.
The water polo matches on Saturday featured impressive performances, including Kamehameha defeating ‘Iolani 12-1. Salvatore Recca was a standout player, scoring four goals. In another match, Punahou triumphed over Mid-Pacific with a score of 17-8.
Finally, the weekend concluded with a series of pigeon racing events, where competitors showcased their birds over challenging distances. The top three finishers came from both the Hawaii Flyers and the Oahu Invitational Flyers, with speeds reaching over 50 mph.
