Wiggins High School’s girls basketball team is entering the new season with heightened ambition following their recent journey to the Class 3A Final Four. As a No. 10 seed, the Tigers made a remarkable run in the 2024-25 season, ultimately falling to No. 3 Denver Christian with a score of 63-49. This experience has only intensified their desire for a deeper postseason run this year.
A standout player during last season was senior Kennedy Kerr, who averaged an impressive 15.4 points per game. Her leadership proved vital for the team, which featured a number of younger players. Head coach Andy Schon emphasized the importance of Kerr’s influence, stating, “It started with our senior leadership. Kennedy Kerr was the one senior that we still had playing last year, and to be honest, it was just her leadership day in and day out in practice and in the locker room that really propelled us.”
Kerr’s guidance helped the team adapt to the fast-paced nature of high school basketball. Now, with the departure of their leading scorer, the team looks to her sister, sophomore Karsyn Kerr, who returns as the top scorer from last season with an average of 7.3 points per game.
The Tigers faced challenges during the last season, finishing with an overall record of 18-10. The team encountered a rough patch, losing four out of five games midway through the season. Despite this, they demonstrated resilience, particularly during the 3A tournament, showcasing their potential. Coach Schon expressed pride in the team’s performance, noting, “The girls went on a nice run, and I was really proud of them at the end of the season there last year.”
As the new season approaches, the Wiggins Tigers are focused on enhancing their skills, particularly in shooting, to fill the gap left by Kennedy Kerr. Schon highlighted the importance of defense as a cornerstone of their program, stating, “Defense is the mainstay of our program, to help offset any poor shooting nights.”
The team is committed to improvement and accountability, with players pushing each other to excel. “They did absolutely everything as a coaching staff we’ve asked of them,” Schon remarked. “You can’t ask for more than what kids can honestly give you. I think that they ran through a wall for each other and for our coaches.”
Looking ahead, the Wiggins girls basketball team aims to build upon their previous success. The players are determined to establish a reputation for Wiggins as a strong contender in high school basketball. With the combination of returning talent and newfound experience, they are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
