In a striking display of skill and teamwork, the Unionville High School girls’ volleyball team handed Downingtown West High School its first loss of the season, winning in straight sets on March 15, 2024. The victory not only marked a significant achievement for Unionville but also reinforced their position as a formidable contender in the Ches-Mont league.
Unionville, currently ranked as the top team in the District 1 Class 4A standings, took control of the match early, winning the first set decisively at 25-14. The second set proved to be more competitive, featuring multiple lead changes and ties, but Unionville ultimately triumphed 25-20. In the final set, they showcased their dominance with a commanding 25-12 win, bringing their record to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Ches-Mont.
Key Players Shine in Victory
Unionville’s success can be attributed to outstanding performances from key players, particularly the Van Deusen sisters. Stalena Van Deusen led the team with 12 kills, while her sister Holland Van Deusen contributed 26 assists alongside seven kills. Middle blockers Maeve Stokes and Lucy Weeber also played crucial roles at the net, helping to secure points with strong blocks and decisive attacks.
Unionville head coach Stephanie Dunn expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance while acknowledging the challenges ahead. “It always feels good to get a win and to be undefeated,” Dunn said. “But, we know there’s a lot of work to do. We’ve played in some tournaments and there are a lot of good teams out there.”
The match began closely, with both teams tied at 2-2 before Unionville gradually pulled ahead. Despite aggressive blocking from Downingtown West’s frontcourt players, including Maya Sanders, Amiah Ross, Leah Hampson, and Mitchell Fallon, Unionville adapted their strategy. They effectively utilized strategic shots and placements, finding gaps in the opposing defense to secure points.
Adapting to Challenges
As the second set unfolded, the intensity increased, featuring seven ties and six lead changes. Downingtown West initially took a brief lead, but Unionville responded with a series of strong plays, including four consecutive points that shifted momentum in their favor. Even as Downingtown West closed the gap late in the set, Unionville maintained composure, with Holland Van Deusen sealing the set with a decisive shot.
Dunn noted the importance of staying focused throughout the match. “When we come out like we did in the first set, teams respond. They start to figure things out and become more competitive,” she said. “We need to keep playing at the same level the whole way through, from start to finish.”
The third set saw Unionville pull ahead with six straight points off Genna Gaughan’s serve, ultimately reaching match point at 24-12. Holland Van Deusen’s service winner concluded the match, further establishing Unionville as a leading force in the league.
As the season progresses, Unionville aims to continue its strong performance with an upcoming match against Kennett on March 20, followed by a challenge against state semifinalist Padua Academy of Delaware on March 22. Meanwhile, Downingtown West will look to rebound in their next match against West Chester Henderson on March 20 as they seek to recover from this setback.
