Trey White Enters NCAA Transfer Portal, Seeks New Opportunities

San Diego State standout Trey White has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal, marking a significant shift in his collegiate football career. The edge rusher, who has been a pivotal player for the Aztecs, stated his intention to explore opportunities with Power Four programs that offer enhanced visibility and financial rewards.

Local Star Explores New Horizons

White, a native of San Diego and a graduate of Eastlake High School, faced a challenging choice over the past two years. Despite his loyalty to his hometown team, he acknowledged the allure of a larger platform and potential financial benefits that San Diego State could not provide. He opted to remain with the Aztecs last year, motivated by a desire to address “unfinished business” after a disappointing 3-9 season in 2024. His commitment helped lead the team to a successful 9-4 record in 2025.

On Thursday, White confirmed his entry into the transfer portal, stating, “Coming to SDSU was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve created life-long relationships and bonds with not only my teammates and coaches but with the community as well. I will always be an Aztec for Life. I’m hoping to improve and compete at the highest level.” His announcement comes as more than twenty of his teammates also enter the portal, seeking new prospects.

Financial Implications and Performance Highlights

White’s decision is influenced by the potential for financial gain, with sources indicating that he could command more than $1.5 million from a Power Four school. This figure is substantial, especially compared to San Diego State’s budget of $6 million for player salaries in the upcoming 2026 season. The Aztecs simply could not allocate a quarter of their budget to retain one player.

A two-time first-team all-Mountain West selection, White’s performance has been impressive. Over the past two seasons, he recorded 19.5 sacks, 29 tackles for loss, and 27 quarterback hurries. His breakout season came in 2024, where he tied for fifth in the nation with 12.5 sacks and ranked seventh in tackles for loss with 18.5.

As concerns grew about the potential departure of key players from San Diego State following the conclusion of the 2024 season, White previously reflected on the balance between financial incentives and personal growth. “In my mind, money isn’t everything. It’s all about the situation and where you can grow the most,” he explained last year when he committed to staying with the Aztecs.

Despite the emotional toll of his recent decision, White concluded that pursuing opportunities in the transfer portal is a necessary step in his athletic journey. His commitment to improving and competing at a higher level underscores the competitive nature of college football today.

As Trey White prepares for his next chapter, his legacy at San Diego State remains strong, defined by his contributions and the bonds he formed. The coming weeks will reveal where this talented athlete may land as he seeks new challenges and opportunities in the world of college football.
