Trabuco Hills High School’s boys basketball team achieved a stunning victory against Blair in a gripping triple overtime match, clinching a spot in the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs. The Mustangs triumphed with a score of 99-92 in what will be remembered as a classic encounter on March 12, 2024, in Mission Viejo.
The Mustangs entered the match as underdogs, facing a Blair team that had recently eliminated the top-seeded Bonita. Despite losing their leading scorer to fouls, Trabuco Hills demonstrated resilience and skill, lifting their record to 19-12 and winning eight out of their last nine games. Coach Sean Sullens expressed pride in his team’s effort, noting the determination that has emerged since a challenging start to the Sea View League.
Central to the Mustangs’ success was Shoji Karst, who delivered a career-high performance with 27 points, primarily through aggressive drives to the basket. “Shoji really came on,” Sullens remarked, highlighting how Karst’s confidence transformed during the season. Carter Peckson also made a significant impact, contributing 20 points off the bench, including crucial baskets in the decisive moments of the third overtime.
The game was marked by intense competition and dramatic shifts. Trabuco Hills quickly found themselves in a tough position when player Ryan Hull fouled out with 15 minutes still on the clock. Despite this setback, the Mustangs capitalized on the opportunity, with five players scoring in double figures. Isaiah De Lorez added 16 points, while Devon Williams contributed 12 points.
Blair fought hard, led by Joseph Riggins, who finished with 28 points, and junior Jaleel Hunter, who added 18 points. The first half was tightly contested, with Trabuco Hills leading 37-36 at halftime. Key moments included a scoring surge where the Mustangs sank four consecutive three-pointers, turning the tide just before the break.
As the game progressed into overtime, the tension escalated. In the first overtime, Riggins tied the score at 76, while in the second, a three-pointer by Nathan Oden brought Blair to an 84-84 draw. However, Trabuco Hills proved too strong in the third overtime, with Peckson’s three-pointer igniting a decisive run that ultimately sealed the win.
Sullens emphasized the mental toughness of his team, stating, “Even when we were .500 and losing games early in the season, I kept saying, ‘I love you guys.’” He noted that the players understand when to attack and when to defend, a crucial element in their latest victory.
Looking ahead, Trabuco Hills will host Norte Vista in the semifinals on March 15, 2024, following Norte Vista’s win over Cathedral. The Mustangs are not only advancing in the playoffs but also have secured a place in the state tournament, giving them at least two more opportunities to compete.
Blair, despite their loss, finished the season with an impressive 21-10 record. Coach Derrick Taylor recognized the strength of Trabuco Hills, stating, “They just beat us… We got beat by a better team tonight.”
As the Mustangs prepare for their next challenge, they carry the momentum of this unforgettable game, underscoring their growth and determination throughout the season.
