The Thomas County Yellow Jackets delivered a commanding performance against the Cairo Syrupmaids, securing a decisive victory of 46-28 in the highly anticipated Battle Across the Creek on Saturday night. The game, held in Cairo, showcased the defensive skills of both teams, with the Lady Jackets maintaining a narrow lead throughout the first quarter.
In the initial period, the teams struggled to find their rhythm, with the Yellow Jackets leading by just two points for much of the quarter. The Syrupmaids managed to score before the buzzer sounded, setting the stage for an intense matchup. As the second quarter unfolded, the pace quickened. Chan Dunbar made a significant impact by sinking two three-pointers, while Payton West contributed with a layup, and Tyra Daniels added a free throw, pushing Central ahead.
Despite the Yellow Jackets’ efforts, the Syrupmaids kept the game competitive, thanks in large part to Clidraya Hammonds and Savannah Holt, who consistently found ways to score. By halftime, Thomas County held a 17-9 advantage, but the momentum was clearly shifting.
After the break, Cairo’s Malaysia Thomas initiated a comeback with a free throw that reduced the deficit to seven points. Holt then made a crucial tip-in, bringing the game within five. However, the Yellow Jackets responded with a powerful 9-0 run, highlighted by Jaden Crews, who scored a pair of free throws and a layup. Crews also assisted Dunbar at the elbow, leading to another three-pointer and extending the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 15 points as the third quarter concluded.
The final quarter saw both teams ramping up their intensity. Following additional free throws from Crews, Hammonds found her groove, scoring a teardrop floater to energize the crowd. Despite Cairo’s efforts to close the gap, including a three-pointer from Ty’Yanna King and another from Elyse Pierce, the Yellow Jackets maintained control.
Crews ultimately sealed the game with a well-timed three-pointer and a layup off a steal, ensuring a comfortable victory for Thomas County. Crews led the scoring for the Yellow Jackets with an impressive 17 points, while Dunbar contributed 15 points, all from three-point range. For the Syrupmaids, Hammonds was the standout scorer with eight points, and Holt added seven.
Looking ahead, Central will host a two-game homestand, starting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, against Lee County at 18:00. Meanwhile, Cairo will travel to face Seminole County on the same day at 18:00, eager to bounce back from this defeat.
