Spurs Edge Magic 114-112 with Fox and Kornet’s Heroics

In a thrilling encounter at the Kia Center on March 13, 2024, the San Antonio Spurs narrowly defeated the Orlando Magic 114-112, relying on the late-game heroics of De’Aaron Fox and a crucial defensive play from Luke Kornet. With star player Victor Wembanyama sidelined due to a calf strain, the Spurs showcased resilience as they secured a hard-fought victory.

Fox, stepping into the spotlight, delivered a stellar performance, finishing with a game-high 31 points. As the game reached its climax, he scored the Spurs’ final ten points, demonstrating his ability to thrive under pressure. With just 1.4 seconds remaining and the score tied, Fox sank two crucial free throws after drawing a foul from Jonathan Isaac, putting San Antonio ahead. His composure in high-stakes moments proved vital, as he overcame earlier mistakes, including seven turnovers.

Defensive Stand and Team Contributions

Kornet’s defensive prowess was equally vital to the Spurs’ success. In the dying seconds of the game, with Orlando trailing by two points, Franz Wagner attempted a layup that could have forced overtime. Kornet, however, rose to the occasion, blocking Wagner’s shot as the buzzer sounded. This decisive moment marked Kornet’s third block of the night, reinforcing the importance of defensive plays in close games.

Despite the absence of their own star, Paolo Banchero (groin strain), the Magic fought tenaciously. Wagner led his team with 25 points, while Jalen Suggs added 24 points before fouling out late in the game. The Magic’s inability to secure the win was evident, as they struggled to make the final play needed to clinch the game.

San Antonio’s bench also played a pivotal role. Rookie Dylan Harper contributed significantly, scoring 16 points and displaying impressive poise for his age. His key three-point shot in the fourth quarter helped maintain the Spurs’ lead. Devin Vassell added 15 points and six rebounds, proving that the Spurs can rely on their depth even when their star player is unavailable.

Looking Ahead for the Spurs

This victory marks the Spurs’ seventh win in their last nine games without Wembanyama, a statistic that could be alarming for other teams in the Western Conference. The performance against the Magic demonstrates that the Spurs are not solely dependent on one player; they possess a well-rounded roster capable of rising to the occasion.

For San Antonio, the win serves as a confidence booster. It highlights their ability to execute under pressure and confirms that Fox remains one of the elite closers in the league. As the Spurs prepare for their upcoming matches, they can take pride in their ability to overcome adversity, knowing they have players ready to step up when needed.

The Spurs’ next game will be crucial as they continue to navigate the season without Wembanyama, aiming to solidify their place in the playoff race.
