Colombian golfer Sebastian Munoz made history at LIV Golf Indianapolis on March 15, 2024, by shooting a stunning 12-under-par 59. This remarkable score marks only the third sub-60 round in LIV Golf’s brief history. The event took place at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Indiana, where Munoz dazzled fans with 14 birdies, including an impressive streak of eight consecutive birdies.
Munoz faced an early setback after a double bogey on the fifth hole, leaving him at one over par. Undeterred, he surged back into contention with a remarkable comeback that featured birdies on 13 of his final 14 holes. His performance culminated in a crucial short putt on the first hole, sealing his historic round. He now heads into the weekend with a three-shot lead over Dustin Johnson.
“I started par-par-birdie, feeling normal,” Munoz reflected on his round. “I just tried to go low, then a double hits me. I just kind of stayed positive, made a couple birdies and kind of made a run and we made eight straight.”
Munoz’s 59 is a personal best, eclipsing his previous low of 60, which he achieved twice in his career. The pressure of the final putt was not lost on him. “The break was a little tricky so I just didn’t want to mess it up,” he said. “I had missed some short ones before, so I just really tried to focus, and at the moment just hit it as smooth as I could, and it went in, so it was great.”
While Munoz seeks his first victory on the LIV Golf circuit, he currently ranks seventh in the season standings. His teammate, Joaquin Niemann, is in a strong position with five wins this year and leads the race for the individual championship with a 12.27-point advantage over Jon Rahm. Niemann finished tied for third at the tournament with a score of 7-under 64, joining Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters from Belgium, and Cameron Smith from Australia.
Johnson, who recorded a 10-birdie, one-bogey round, expressed his desire to conclude the season successfully after struggling to find form throughout the year. “I’ve still got a few more tournaments this year, so it’s not like it’s that much pressure on me,” he said. “But obviously I always want to win. That’s the goal. That’s why I’m out here.”
In addition to individual performances, the team aspect of the LIV Golf format added excitement to the event. Munoz and Niemann’s stellar rounds propelled Torque GC to a commanding 23-under, establishing a four-shot lead in the team competition. Johnson’s 4Aces GC stands second at 19-under, while Phil Mickelson‘s HyFlyers GC is in third place at 15-under.
As the tournament progresses, anticipation builds for the final rounds, where Munoz will aim to maintain his lead and secure his first LIV Golf victory. With such an electrifying start, fans can expect thrilling action as the weekend unfolds.
