Cross country meets hosted by schools in Tamaqua, Gillingham, and Schuylkill Haven showcased impressive performances from various teams in October 2023. Competitors demonstrated their athletic prowess as they raced against each other, with notable individual and team results emerging from the events.
Highlights from Tamaqua’s Event
In the boys’ individual category at the Tamaqua meet, Aidan Elston from Tamaqua finished in first place with a time of 18:07, followed closely by Francesco Carr of Blue Mountain, who completed the race in 18:17. Other top finishers included Grayson Meck from Blue Mountain at 18:48 and Russell Hunter, also of Blue Mountain, who clocked in at 19:59.
The team scores reflected Blue Mountain’s dominance, as they secured victories in each of their matchups. They triumphed over North Schuylkill with a score of 21 to 36, Mahanoy Area with 17 to 43, and Tamaqua with 22 to 39.
In the girls’ individual race, Genevieve Dondo from North Schuylkill led the field with a time of 21:54. The competition was fierce, with Felicia Bro from Mahanoy Area finishing second at 23:11 and Emma Lazarchick of Blue Mountain taking third with 23:29. North Schuylkill’s girls team also shone, defeating Blue Mountain with a score of 50 to 15.
Gillingham and Schuylkill Haven Performances
At the Gillingham meet, competition was equally intense. In the boys’ individual race, Nash Stehr from Nativity clinched first place with a time of 20:26, followed closely by teammate Shane Myer who finished in 20:38. The team results saw Nativity edging out Marian with a score of 24 to 32, while Gillingham faced a challenging day, finishing with 36 points against Nativity.
The girls’ individual race featured standout performances, with Teghan Biros from Marian taking first place. The team scores favored Tri-Valley, who emerged victorious with a score of 13 to 8 against Marian.
Meanwhile, in Schuylkill Haven, the girls’ individual race was led by Ayla Fessler-Kiryanan, who achieved a time of 24:24. The team competition concluded with Schuylkill Haven scoring 35 against Shenandoah Valley’s 23, while Weatherly claimed victory over Schuylkill Haven with a score of 44 to 19.
The boys’ individual race saw Robert Espinal from Shenandoah Valley finishing first with a time of 17:49, followed by Colton McClusky from Schuylkill Haven at 19:46.
