The annual I Like Pie fun run took place on November 28, 2025, despite early morning sleet. Organized by Cascade Lakes Relay, the event attracted around 5,000 participants eager to embrace the Thanksgiving spirit. As the weather improved, runners and walkers made their way through the scenic Old Mill, culminating their efforts at Riverbend Park.
CEO of Cascade Lakes Relay, Scott Douglass, expressed enthusiasm about the event’s growth. “Central Oregonians are hardy people and most importantly, they’re focused on getting their run in and their pie,” he noted. Participants donned bright I Like Pie hats, which complemented the chilly weather, adding a festive touch to the morning’s activities.
Pies Galore and Community Spirit
This year’s fun run featured over 400 pies, generously provided by Costco, including popular flavors such as apple, pumpkin, and pumpkin cheesecake. Vegan and gluten-free options ensured all participants could enjoy a slice. Douglass mentioned the successful return of the Perfect Slice challenge, where local bakers showcased their talents. More than 20 submissions were evaluated by notable Bend figures, including Mayor Melanie Kebler and Deschutes County commissioners, with the strawberry rhubarb pie taking home the top prize.
The event raised over $50,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bend. New CEO Michael Baker, who was in his third week at the organization, praised the community’s overwhelming support. He shared, “I had so many people, at least three dozen, come up to me today to say welcome to Bend, we’re happy to have you.” Baker emphasized the importance of accessibility for youth, stating that such funding directly aids in providing scholarships. Last year alone, the organization distributed over $40,000 in youth scholarships.
A Community Celebration
Among the attendees were newcomers Jenny and Nick Foster, who recently relocated from Iowa. They discovered the event through other races and viewed it as an opportunity to engage with the community. “It was a really fun way to see what Bend is all about,” Jenny Foster remarked after enjoying slices of pumpkin cheesecake pie. The couple planned to celebrate with a Friendsgiving, bringing along traditional midwestern dishes like macaroni and cheese and glazed carrots.
As the I Like Pie fun run came to a close, it highlighted not only the resilience of the participants but also the strong community spirit that defines Bend, Oregon. With plans for future events, including a Mistletoe Miler family run, Cascade Lakes Relay aims to continue fostering this sense of togetherness and celebration in the years to come.
