Rashaan Mbemba, a junior forward for the Colorado State Rams, is set to take on a leadership role as the team gears up for the upcoming season. After battling injuries during his first two years, the 6-foot-7 player from Austria is now healthy and prepared to contribute significantly both on and off the court. The Rams will open their season at home on Monday against Incarnate Word.
Mbemba expressed his enthusiasm about his fitness and readiness, stating, “It’s a blessing. I’ve been here two years, I’ve had two rough summers with my groin issues, so it’s hard to see your whole team practice every day getting better.” He emphasized the importance of this summer, remarking on how it allowed him to build chemistry with his teammates and develop a sense of camaraderie.
As the most seasoned member of the CSU roster, Mbemba averaged seven points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season. He was a consistent starter when healthy, and new head coach Ali Farokhmanesh has noted Mbemba’s readiness as the season approaches. “He’s really ready to go as the season begins,” Farokhmanesh commented. He highlighted how Mbemba’s ability to maintain fitness throughout the offseason has positively impacted his performance.
The transformation in Mbemba’s physique is attributed to being able to work out without the interruptions of injury recovery. Farokhmanesh also observed a notable shift in Mbemba’s mentality and approach to practice. “It’s those small details that really changed for Rashaan and it’s why he is where he is right now,” he stated.
With a roster that features six transfers and two freshmen, Mbemba’s experience will be invaluable. “Being here two years is obviously an advantage where I can help them with certain movements and little details,” he explained, expressing a desire to step out of his comfort zone and guide his teammates.
Farokhmanesh has set expectations for Mbemba to enhance his leadership skills, particularly given the team’s transition from last year’s squad that won the Mountain West Conference tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The coaching staff has encouraged him to be more vocal, a challenge Mbemba is eager to embrace.
The journey has not been without its struggles. Upon arriving in Fort Collins from Austria in 2023, Mbemba felt homesick and initially found it difficult to connect with others. He was often in touch with his girlfriend via FaceTime, a testament to how challenging his adjustment period was. Farokhmanesh noted, “He didn’t hang out with anybody… now I think he feels like this is home.”
Despite having opportunities to transfer, Mbemba chose to remain loyal to the program, a decision that has ultimately led to his growth as a player and a leader. “Had he left and gone somewhere else, I don’t know if he’d be in the position he’s in,” Farokhmanesh reflected, recognizing the development Mbemba has undergone since joining the team.
As the Rams prepare for their season opener, Rashaan Mbemba stands ready to make an impact, equipped not only with improved physical fitness but also a commitment to lead his team through a season filled with potential challenges and opportunities. With his determination and experience, he is poised to play a crucial role in the success of the Colorado State Rams this year.
