The Potosi Lady Trojans claimed the Class 4, District 2 championship on March 16, 2024, following a thrilling overtime victory against St. Pius, finishing the game 51-49. This win marks a significant achievement for Potosi, ending a nine-year absence from the state playoffs.
Key Moments Leading to Victory
Potosi guard Sabra Brown played a pivotal role in the final moments of the game. With only 3.2 seconds remaining, she was fouled while attempting a putback after her sister, Sabyn Brown, sank crucial three-pointers in both the fourth quarter and overtime. Sabra calmly converted both free throws, sealing the victory for Potosi.
“I always try to get to the back side and see if I can get a ball. You never know,” Sabra said after the game. Her performance, which included a team-high 21 points, was instrumental in the Lady Trojans’ success.
Throughout the match, the teams remained closely contested. St. Pius held a 44-39 lead with under three minutes left in regulation. However, Potosi responded with back-to-back three-pointers, one from Eden Robart, who scored her only field goal of the game during a crucial moment.
Defensive Strategies and Player Contributions
Potosi head coach Josh Mapes emphasized the importance of defensive strategy leading into the game. “I told the girls that we have been in this situation last year, and not to be nervous,” he stated. The Lady Trojans executed their plan effectively, limiting St. Pius to only ten turnovers while forcing twelve on their opponents.
St. Pius center Brooke Blankenship had a standout performance, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. However, Potosi’s defense, particularly from Robart and others, managed to contain her scoring opportunities.
The game saw significant contributions from other players as well. Brenley Thornton scored seven points, while Chloe Rowe showcased her skills with four assists, helping maintain the team’s momentum throughout the match.
In a back-and-forth game, Potosi’s ability to connect on free throws proved crucial. The Lady Trojans converted 13 of 21 attempts, while St. Pius managed only 4 of 8. This disparity in free throw success played a key role in Potosi’s narrow victory.
As the clock ran out, St. Pius attempted a desperate 60-foot shot, which fell short, solidifying Potosi’s place as champions.
With this victory, the Potosi Lady Trojans, now boasting a record of 22-4, will advance to face reigning state champion Doniphan in the sectional round on March 18, 2024. This championship win is the first for Mapes as head coach of the Lady Trojans, marking the program’s fourth district title overall.
“It was just everything we have worked on all season,” Rowe reflected. “We dug down deep, played defense, and got stops, and were making huge shots that brought us back into the game.”
The Potosi Lady Trojans’ triumph serves as a testament to their hard work and resilience, especially considering the absence of seniors on the current roster. The team looks forward to continuing their journey in the playoffs, aiming to build on this momentum.
