The Potosi boys’ wrestling team triumphed at the Central Invitational held on October 28, 2023, in Park Hills, securing a first-place finish among 17 competing teams. The Trojans amassed a total of 201 points, edging out their nearest rivals, including Affton, Gateway Science, and Pattonville. The victory was marked by outstanding individual performances from Carter Pyatt, Karsen Boyer, and Gavin Stone, each achieving first-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Potosi’s success was highlighted by Pyatt’s impressive performance in the 165-pound championship match. He achieved a remarkable 18-0 technical fall against his opponent from St. Francis Borgia, marking his third consecutive title at this event. Stone also showcased his skill, winning three straight falls in the 126-pound category. Boyer, competing at 175 pounds, managed to secure a title despite facing a challenging match against Central freshman Lane Warden, who initially scored a takedown.
Other notable performers for Potosi included Blayne Maxwell (144 pounds), Zane Richards (150 pounds), and Nick Brown (190 pounds), all of whom advanced to the finals. North County and Central High School also made their mark, with both schools securing two bracket champions each, placing fifth and sixth overall, respectively.
In the girls’ division, the Ste. Genevieve wrestling team dominated the Central Invitational, claiming the championship with a total of 270.5 points. Seven Dragons emerged victorious in their weight classes, leading the team to a decisive win over Pattonville, which finished with 145.5 points.
Key contributors for Ste. Genevieve included Aila Wolk (115 pounds), Ragan Picou (135 pounds), and Anna Fischer (170 pounds), all of whom finished with perfect 4-0 records, each recording four falls in their matches. The Dragons had nine finalists overall, demonstrating their depth and talent across multiple weight classes.
Potosi’s girls’ team also had commendable performances, with three wrestlers finishing as runners-up. Launa Cantrell (170 pounds), Kammara Tedder (115 pounds), and Zowee Gamble (235 pounds) all advanced to the finals, showcasing the strength of Potosi’s program. Central High School’s freshman Lillee Petty captured the 110-pound title, making a significant contribution to her team’s overall performance.
In the dual contests held in Ste. Genevieve, the boys’ wrestling team remained undefeated, with standout performances from Drake Meyer, who secured four first-period pins at 150 pounds. The Dragons defeated Valle Catholic 63-15, marking another successful outing in their campaign.
The Central Invitational highlighted the growing competitiveness and skill level in high school wrestling, with numerous athletes demonstrating exceptional talent and determination. As the season progresses, both Potosi and Ste. Genevieve will be looking to build on their successes, aiming for further achievements in upcoming tournaments.
