Former PGA champion Paul Azinger has been named the recipient of the prestigious Payne Stewart Award, an honor he describes as the pinnacle of his career. The announcement was made on Monday, recognizing Azinger not only for his achievements in golf but also for his character and contributions to charity.
A Legacy of Honor and Friendship
The Payne Stewart Award was established in 2000 to commemorate the legacy of its namesake, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash in 1999 alongside three others. Since then, it has evolved into one of golf’s most esteemed awards, celebrating players who exemplify character, sportsmanship, and a commitment to charitable causes. The award ceremony will take place live from Atlanta during the Tour Championship in August 2024.
Expressing his gratitude, Azinger stated, “To be named the recipient of this award, representing my dearest friend, is one of the proudest moments in my life.” His close friendship with Stewart was a significant influence throughout his career on the PGA Tour.
Career Highlights and Contributions
Azinger’s illustrious career includes twelve victories on the PGA Tour, highlighted by a dramatic win at the 1993 PGA Championship, which he secured in a playoff. Beyond individual accolades, he is also renowned for transforming the Ryder Cup qualification system and leading the U.S. team to a memorable victory against Europe in 2008.
Currently, Azinger serves as a television analyst for the PGA Tour Champions, continuing to share his insights and passion for the sport. His off-course contributions are equally noteworthy. In 2021, he and his wife, Toni Azinger, founded the Azinger Family Compassion Center in Manatee County, Florida. This center aims to support vulnerable and struggling families, embodying the spirit of charity that the Payne Stewart Award seeks to honor.
The Southern Company, which sponsors the award, plays a crucial role in its impact. They contribute $300,000 to the recipient’s chosen charity and an additional $200,000 to programs associated with the Stewart Family Foundation.
As Azinger prepares to accept this honor, his legacy in golf and charitable work continues to inspire both current players and fans alike, ensuring that the memory of Payne Stewart lives on through the values they both exemplify.
