Carnell Tate, a key wide receiver for Ohio State, will not participate in the game against Purdue due to precautionary measures. Coach Ryan Day announced the decision after Tate reported feeling “a little tight” during warmups.
Big Ten Network first reported Tate’s condition prior to the game, indicating that he might still have a chance to play. However, Ohio State later confirmed that the decision was made to hold him out entirely for safety reasons. “He’s not gonna play. We’re gonna hold him,” Day stated during a halftime interview. “It was kind of a thing before the game — we just didn’t feel comfortable putting him out there, so you won’t see him in the second half.”
Impact on the Game
With Tate sidelined, the Buckeyes turned to Jeremiah Smith, who stepped up to lead the team’s receiving corps. Smith recorded seven receptions for a total of 109 yards and one touchdown in the first half. Other players such as Max Klare, Brandon Inniss, James Peoples, Bryson Rodgers, and Nate Roberts contributed to the passing game, helping quarterback Julian Sayin achieve 15 completions for 182 yards.
This season, Tate has demonstrated his value on the field, accumulating 39 receptions for 711 yards and seven touchdowns. His absence against Purdue is significant as the team prepares for its next challenge.
Looking Ahead
The Buckeyes are set to host UCLA on November 15, 2023, at 19:30 in their home stadium, known as the Horseshoe. This game will provide Tate with another opportunity to showcase his skills, assuming he recovers adequately from his recent concerns.
Ohio State continues to navigate the season amidst growing expectations, particularly with star players gaining attention for potential accolades. As the team prepares for upcoming matchups, the focus remains on maintaining player health while striving for success on the field.
