The Denver Nuggets secured a decisive victory against the Phoenix Suns, winning 130-112 on March 2, 2024. The win improved the Nuggets’ record to 14-5, maintaining their status as unbeaten this season following a loss. Despite the win, the Nuggets faced challenges in the turnover department, a trend that merits close attention as the season progresses.
Turnover Troubles Persist
Following a previous loss, center Nikola Jokic expressed concerns about the team’s recent defensive struggles. “Maybe everybody needs to be a little more aggressive, holding them, using two hands and testing the officials,” he told The Denver Post, highlighting the need for increased physicality and better point-of-attack defense.
In their last game against the San Antonio Spurs, the Nuggets lost the turnover battle significantly, committing 17 turnovers that resulted in 30 points for their opponents. Historically, turnovers have been a critical factor in their losses; in four of their five defeats this season, they have consistently lost the turnover battle, with opponents averaging fewer than 10 turnovers in those games.
This trend continued against the Suns, as the Nuggets committed 16 turnovers to Phoenix’s seven. Remarkably, they managed to overcome this deficit through an impressive shooting performance, hitting 58% from the field and from three-point range. Notably, Tim Hardaway Jr. led with a 7-for-11 shooting effort from beyond the arc, while teammate Spencer Jones added four three-pointers in a standout offensive display.
Road Warriors on a Winning Streak
Traditionally, the Nuggets have enjoyed a strong home-court advantage; however, they have faced recent difficulties at home, losing three consecutive games. Conversely, they have been formidable on the road, winning their last ten games played during the second leg of back-to-back matchups. Their only loss in such scenarios this season came at home against the Sacramento Kings.
Jokic continued to shine on the court, even while dealing with a left wrist injury sustained earlier in the season. He delivered another exceptional performance, recording 26 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists in what was a nearly flawless shooting night. Jokic made all six attempts from the field and converted 10 of 11 free throws. His ability to perform at a high level despite fatigue is evident, as he averages 39.3 points, 12 rebounds, and 11.8 assists across four back-to-back games this season.
In addition, Bruce Brown played through a knee injury sustained in a previous match. Despite being officially diagnosed with a right knee sprain, he contributed significantly with a season-high 10 assists and only one turnover, showcasing his resilience and playmaking ability.
With injuries affecting key players like Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun, the Nuggets will need Brown’s continued presence and production. The recent second-unit lineup featuring Brown, Hardaway, Jones, Zeke Nnaji, and Jonas Valanciunas has provided valuable contributions to the team’s success.
As the Nuggets prepare to host the Dallas Mavericks on March 4, 2024, the ongoing turnover issue will be a focal point for improvement. Given the current injury situation, sustaining their winning momentum will be crucial as they aim for success in the coming matches.
