The Nodaway Valley boys basketball team demonstrated significant progress last week despite suffering close losses in two competitive games. The Wolverines showcased improved scoring consistency and competitiveness, particularly in high-pressure situations. These developments were evident during matches against West Central Valley and Central Decatur, where the team remained in contention until the final moments.
In a non-conference home game against West Central Valley on January 9, 2026, Nodaway Valley trailed 14-11 after the first quarter. The teams were neck-and-neck at halftime, tied 22-22. A basket by Titus Hamer narrowed the deficit to 42-40 heading into the fourth quarter. With just 2:17 left on the clock, Ty Rardin was fouled while making a three-point shot, converting the ensuing free throw to bring the score to 54-53. Despite Rardin’s team-leading 12 points, West Central Valley managed to secure a 59-55 victory with crucial defensive plays in the closing moments. Alongside Rardin, Hamer, Jack Berg, and Titan Foster each contributed 10 points to the Wolverines’ effort.
On January 6, 2026, the team faced Central Decatur in a challenging road game, rallying from a double-digit deficit at halftime. Central Decatur had taken an early 14-9 lead and extended it with an 11-0 run to finish the second quarter ahead 28-14. Trailing 40-26 after three quarters, Nodaway Valley outscored Central Decatur 14-9 in the fourth quarter, bringing the game within two points with three minutes remaining. Despite their efforts, the Wolverines fell short, losing 45-40. This match marked Nodaway Valley’s third defeat this season by five points or fewer. Hamer led the Wolverines with a career-high 16 points, including 11 in the second half, while Rardin, averaging 16.3 points per game, was limited to just seven.
Nodaway Valley’s performance this season reflects a notable improvement from the previous year. The team has consistently reached the 40-point mark in seven games, showcasing their offensive growth. Bench players like Jacob Fry and sophomore Evan Meisenheimer played vital roles during games, especially as several starters faced foul trouble.
Looking ahead, the Wolverines are set for a busy schedule. After hosting West Central Valley, they will play at Southwest Valley on January 12, 2026, followed by road games at East Union on January 13, Mount Ayr on January 16, and a home game against Panorama on January 15. As the season progresses, Nodaway Valley will aim to build on their recent performances and secure more victories.
