The New York Liberty introduced their new head coach, Chris DeMarco, during a press conference on December 6, 2025. DeMarco, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors, aims to bring his experience and coaching philosophy to the WNBA franchise. His appointment comes after a disappointing first-round playoff exit for the Liberty, leading to the dismissal of former coach Sandy Brondello.
In his half-hour address, DeMarco articulated his coaching ethos, which he credits to his time under Steve Kerr at Golden State and his role as head coach of the Bahamas men’s national team. “I was raised the right way in the right culture by Steve Kerr,” DeMarco stated, emphasizing his commitment to developing his staff and players.
DeMarco’s journey in basketball began in 2012 when he joined the Warriors as a video intern. Over almost 14 years, he rose to become one of Kerr’s lead assistants, gaining extensive experience on both the defensive and offensive sides of the game. “I’ve done player development, I’ve been a video coordinator, I’ve been a scout and done everything I can outside of being a head coach in the NBA,” he explained.
With the Liberty having secured the WNBA title in 2024, DeMarco now faces the task of guiding a team with remarkable talent, including stars such as Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, and Breanna Stewart. He likened their potential to the iconic players from the Warriors’ championship era. “These guys are all pros, and they all would teach the younger players how to work,” DeMarco remarked, highlighting the importance of mentorship within the team.
DeMarco expressed his enthusiasm for leading a team with a championship pedigree. “For those who have won at the highest level, it’s so hard to get there. We have an organization that’s been there and a team full of players who have been there,” he said. This optimism is crucial as the Liberty navigate a transitional phase following their early playoff exit.
As DeMarco prepares to take the helm, he also acknowledges the challenges facing the WNBA. The league is currently in contentious negotiations regarding its next collective bargaining agreement, raising the possibility of a lockout. Despite this uncertainty, DeMarco remains confident in the Liberty’s potential. “The foundation is there, and when you have players who have already won, it’s such a competitive advantage in any league,” he noted.
DeMarco’s final game with the Warriors is set for December 29, 2025, when the team faces the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. As he transitions into his new role, the Liberty’s fan base eagerly anticipates how his leadership will shape the team’s future.
