Charleston will host a significant clash as the Morgantown High School football team prepares to face Martinsburg High School for the Class AAAA state championship on October 10, 2025. This matchup marks the first time in two decades that Morgantown has reached this level, with their last appearance also against Martinsburg. The championship game will take place at Laidley Field, kicking off a weekend of four state championship games.
Morgantown enters the contest with a formidable record of 12-1, having one of the strongest defenses in the state, allowing an average of just 11.8 points per game throughout the season. The Mohigans’ only defeat came from the Bulldogs, who won 34-6 earlier this season on October 10.
Sean Biser, head coach of Morgantown, acknowledged the challenge posed by Martinsburg. “They are so athletic and long on the perimeter,” he stated. “They really challenge you and execute well on all sides of the ball. I’m not sure you can stop them, but hopefully we can slow them down a little and move the ball a little better offensively this time around.”
Martinsburg’s attack features a dynamic junior duo, quarterback Brian Dick and wide receiver Boston Todd. The pair have connected for 48 receptions totaling 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Todd also leads the Bulldogs in rushing, with 1,076 yards on 166 carries, contributing six rushing touchdowns to his impressive statistics.
Biser emphasized the importance of fundamental defensive skills for his team. “We have to do our jobs and have good discipline, and make sure everyone is communicating every play,” he said. “Our message is simple: tackle well and make plays when your time comes, and we will see what happens.”
The Mohigans will rely on the skills of sophomore quarterback Maddox Twigg, who has amassed over 3,000 total yards and 41 touchdowns this season. Twigg has been pivotal during the playoffs, contributing significantly on both offense and defense. In a thrilling quarterfinal match against Spring Mills, he was responsible for 254 of 263 offensive yards in a 34-33 double-overtime victory, while also leading the team with 11 tackles.
Following that performance, he showcased his versatility again with nine tackles and six touchdowns in a 52-21 semifinal win against Jefferson. Biser noted Twigg’s natural progression as a player, saying, “He’s a winner and wants the ball in his hands with the opportunity to impact the game.”
One of the key matchups to watch will be Todd against the Morgantown secondary. Containing Todd and preventing Martinsburg from executing big plays could shift the momentum in Morgantown’s favor. Senior linebacker Carter Cooper remarked, “We need to execute better. I don’t think they’ll do anything that surprises us or catches us off guard. We just need to stay disciplined and make sure we are swarming the ball.”
The Class AAAA state championship is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 PM on Friday at Laidley Field, promising an exciting showdown between these two competitive teams.
