Molokai Hoe Race and College Sports Events Highlight October 12

The annual Molokai Hoe race took place on October 12, 2025, featuring canoes racing from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Waikiki Beach on Oahu. Competitors began their journey at 8 a.m., with the top finishers expected to arrive around 12:45 p.m. at Duke Kahanamoku Beach, located adjacent to the Hilton Hawaiian Village pier. This iconic event attracts paddlers from across the region, showcasing the rich tradition of canoe racing in Hawaii.

In addition to the Molokai Hoe, the day was packed with college sports activities. The Big West women’s soccer match between UC San Diego and Hawaii kicked off at 4 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. This match highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams as they vie for a strong position in the league.

Earlier in the day, the Manoa Fall Classic for college men’s tennis commenced at 9 a.m. at the UH Tennis Courts. This tournament is significant for players seeking to improve their rankings and showcase their talents to scouts and coaches.

The evening featured another exciting event: a Big West women’s volleyball game where UC Santa Barbara faced off against Hawaii. Scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Bankoh Arena in the Stan Sheriff Center, this game promised a thrilling atmosphere as fans rallied to support their teams.

Looking ahead, no local sporting events are scheduled for the following Monday, allowing teams and athletes a brief respite before their next competitions.

In water polo, the ILH showcased a match on Saturday where Boys Varsity I team Punahou triumphed over Mid-Pacific with a score of 10-3. Key players included Punahou’s Blake Garlin, who scored three goals, and Nalu Pietsch, contributing another three. In the Boys Varsity I-AA category, Punahou again dominated, defeating Mid-Pacific 12-1.

The ILH Sprint Regatta #3 took place at Ala Wai Canal, featuring kayakers competing in 250-meter sprints. In the boys’ division, Cole Schwake from Mid-Pacific led with a time of 55.96 seconds, followed closely by Kepler Funasaki from Punahou at 59.90 seconds. For the girls, Lynne Kato of Mid-Pacific secured victory with a time of 1:08.32.

In soccer action, the PACWEST conference hosted a series of matches on Saturday, including a tie between Chaminade and Biola at Saint Louis School field, ending in a 1-1 draw. Notable goals were scored by Kayden Medeiros for Chaminade and Ethan Hardin for Biola.

In volleyball, the ILH Girls Varsity I Tournament Semifinals featured several competitive matches, with ‘Iolani defeating Kamehameha in straight sets. Other highlights included University overcoming Maryknoll and Sacred Hearts edging out Damien in a thrilling match that went to a decisive set.

The Manoa Fall Classic continued to showcase emerging talent in college tennis, with several doubles matches held on Saturday. Notable performances included Kent Mueller and Timothy Li from Hawaii defeating Prathinav Chunduru and Yaron Guberman from UC San Diego with a score of 6-3. The competitive nature of the event reflects the strong tennis programs of participating universities.

As the weekend progresses, local sports enthusiasts look forward to more thrilling matches and races, celebrating the vibrant athletic culture of the region.
