Michigan State Dominates Cornell with Record Scoring in 114-97 Win

In a commanding performance, No. 9 Michigan State triumphed over Cornell with a score of 114-97 on December 18, 2023. The Spartans showcased their offensive prowess, overcoming a slow start to achieve their highest point total of the season at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan.

Leading the charge for Michigan State was Jeremy Fears Jr., who not only scored a career-high 21 points but also contributed 11 assists. This marked a significant improvement from his previous best of 19 points, achieved against North Carolina on November 27.

Strong Contributions from Teammates

Other standout performances included Coen Carr, who scored 19 points and secured six rebounds, and Trey Fort, adding 14 points. Additionally, Divine Ugochukwu and Jaxon Kohler contributed 12 points and 11 points respectively, with Kohler also grabbing 10 rebounds.

Despite the victory, Michigan State allowed a season-high total of 97 points to Cornell, which had not previously scored more than 72 points in any game this season. The Spartans’ previous scoring record for the season was 92 points against Toledo on December 16.

On the other side, Cooper Noard led Cornell with 19 points, while teammates Adam Hinton and Jake Fiegen each added 15 points. This matchup was significant as it marked the first meeting between the two teams since November 24, 2000.

Looking Ahead

With this win, Michigan State improved their record to 12-1, setting a strong tone as they prepare to enter the Big Ten slate. Their next challenge will be against Nebraska on December 22. Meanwhile, Cornell, now at 6-6, will host Alfred State on the same day.

The match not only highlighted Michigan State’s offensive capabilities but also demonstrated the need for defensive adjustments as they head into conference play. The Spartans will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming games.
