Michigan Graduation Shooting Averted; Two Suspects Arrested

PONTIAC, MI – A potential tragedy was narrowly avoided at a Michigan high school graduation ceremony on Tuesday, as authorities thwarted what could have become a mass shooting. Two suspects are now in custody, according to Oakland County officials.

Breaking: Arrests Made in Graduation Threat

Oakland County authorities have detained two suspects in connection with the attempted attack at the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac (ATAP) graduation, held at the United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) sports complex. Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced the arrests during a press conference on Friday.

Immediate Impact

The situation unfolded around 6:40 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to the venue following reports of a physical altercation. A family member alerted the authorities to a Snapchat post threatening to shoot up the ceremony, prompting immediate action.

Key Details Emerge

One of the suspects, Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman, aged 20, was located after being identified as a person of interest. Hardiman is currently on probation for a previous weapons offense. The second suspect, a 19-year-old whose identity remains undisclosed, also has a criminal history involving weapons.

“So just those two weapons without changing magazines, had 80 rounds of potential firepower,” said Sheriff Bouchard.

Weapons Recovered

Upon arrival, authorities, in collaboration with UWM security, discovered two fully-loaded firearms at the scene. These included a pink, AR-style pistol and a Glock semi-automatic handgun, each equipped with a 40-round magazine.

  • 80 rounds of potential firepower

Background Context

The suspects, both residents of Pontiac, were reportedly involved in an earlier altercation and were seen placing packages under vehicles in the parking lot. It remains unclear if they had any direct ties to the charter school, though they reportedly have friends and relatives who attended the graduation.

The motive behind the attempted shooting remains unknown, as those involved in ongoing disputes with the suspects have refused to cooperate with the investigation.

What Comes Next

While no charges have been filed yet, authorities continue to investigate the incident. The school expressed relief that the ceremony concluded without further disruption, emphasizing the swift action taken by staff and security to manage the situation.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on alert, with officials urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Thankfully, no one within the ceremony was harmed, and we were able to continue and complete our beautiful commencement celebration without further disruption,” the school stated in a social media post.

The arrest of the suspects marks a significant step in preventing potential violence, highlighting the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in ensuring public safety.
