Miami Dolphins Unveil Depth Chart Ahead of 2025 Preseason

The Miami Dolphins have released their first depth chart ahead of the 2025 preseason, offering insights into Head Coach Mike McDaniel‘s strategic plans. With a joint practice scheduled in Chicago on August 8, followed by their first preseason game on August 10, the Dolphins are preparing for a pivotal season.

As the team looks to finalize its roster, approximately ten positions remain competitive. The depth chart indicates significant player placements and potential roles, emphasizing the team’s direction as they head into training camp.

Quarterback and Running Back Insights

One of the most notable aspects of the depth chart is the position of Quinn Ewers, currently listed as the third-string quarterback. Despite a strong performance over the past ten days, Ewers finds himself behind Zach Wilson, who has secured the backup role. Ewers will need to showcase his abilities during the preseason to secure a spot on the final roster.

In the running back position, Alexander Mattison has made a positive impression, outpacing rookie Ollie Gordon II and ranking behind De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright. Mattison’s enhanced speed and performance during training camp have positioned him favorably as the Dolphins approach their first game.

Offensive Line and Defensive Strategy

The Dolphins appear to be taking a calculated risk with their offensive line, featuring first-year starters Patrick Paul and Jonah Savaiinaea on the left side. While their lack of experience could be a concern, their physicality presents a strong advantage, particularly for running plays directed to the left.

On the defensive side, Chop Robinson stands out as the first-string edge rusher. Interestingly, the Dolphins have opted to list twelve defensive starters, indicating a robust defensive strategy that could involve using Robinson, Jaelan Phillips, and Bradley Chubb on the field simultaneously. Robinson is anticipated to be a key player, with potential to achieve double-digit sacks throughout the season.

In the defensive tackle lineup, Kenneth Grant is noted as a second-string player, expected to receive ample playing time despite Benito Jones being listed as the starter. The depth chart also includes Matt Dickerson and Jordan Phillips, both of whom have shown promise during training sessions.

Linebackers and Cornerbacks

At linebacker, Willie Gay is positioned as a second-string player, demonstrating a strong performance in camp. Although he trails behind starters Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson, it is anticipated that the coaching staff will find opportunities for Gay to contribute defensively.

The cornerback lineup features Storm Duck and Kendall Sheffield as first-string players, signaling the coaching staff’s confidence in their abilities. Other cornerbacks such as Jack Jones, Cam Smith, and Jason Marshall may also factor into the roster as the preseason progresses. Ethan Bonner is noted as a second-string player, while Cam currently occupies the third-string position, indicating a competitive environment for roster spots.

Tight End and Punter Competition

In the tight end position, veteran Darren Waller is set to be the starting player. Although he has yet to practice due to conditioning, his experience makes him a critical asset for the team. As Waller continues to ramp up his fitness, players such as Pharoah Brown, Julian Hill, and Tanner Conner are expected to receive significant reps during the upcoming joint practice.

The punting position has become an intriguing competition between Jake Bailey and Jake Stonehouse, both of whom are All-Pro punters. The depth chart reflects a tight race, with the team yet to name a definitive starter.

As the Miami Dolphins move closer to their preseason opener, the depth chart provides a glimpse into the team’s strategic approach and the dynamics of the roster. With a blend of established players and newcomers, fans will be eager to see how these strategies unfold on the field.
