Miami Dolphins Eye Tyler Higbee to Strengthen Tight End Position

The Miami Dolphins are facing significant challenges at the tight end position, prompting concerns about their offensive capabilities heading into the new season. With Mike McDaniel under pressure to deliver a competitive team, securing a reliable starter is crucial. Recent speculation suggests that an opportunity may arise to address this need, particularly if the Los Angeles Rams decide to part ways with tight end Tyler Higbee.

Higbee has been a consistent performer for the Rams since being drafted in 2016. Throughout his career, he has scored at least one touchdown each season, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively to the team’s offense. At 32 years old, Higbee still possesses the skills necessary to be a valuable asset. However, with the Rams drafting Terrance Ferguson in the second round this year, the team’s direction may be shifting. Ferguson showed promise during training camp and could potentially take over the starting role.

The Rams also bolstered their tight end roster by signing Colby Parkinson last offseason. Parkinson’s experience as a capable backup positions him as a viable alternative if Higbee is released. As noted by Brent Sobleski from Bleacher Report, “Higbee might be a security blanket for the coaching staff, but the Rams have significant talent at the tight end position to proceed without him on the roster.”

Should Higbee become available, the Dolphins would be wise to act swiftly. Currently, Miami’s tight end group ranks among the weakest in the league, particularly after trading Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Dolphins brought in Darren Waller to fill the starting tight end position, but concerns about his performance linger. Waller, now 32, has not played in two years, making his reliability questionable.

Assuming Higbee joins the Dolphins, he would immediately step into the starting role. While he may not fully replicate the contributions of Smith from 2024, his presence would be a notable upgrade over Waller and free-agent acquisition Pharaoh Brown. Given the current landscape of available options, Miami should not hesitate to pursue Higbee if the Rams make him a free agent.

As the Dolphins prepare for the upcoming season, acquiring a player of Higbee’s caliber could significantly enhance their offensive strategy. With their tight end situation in flux, the Dolphins must be proactive in securing the talent necessary to compete effectively. The potential for a deal with Higbee presents a promising opportunity that Miami cannot afford to overlook.
