Mercedes has confirmed that it will retain its current driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season, announcing contract extensions for both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. This decision follows months of speculation surrounding the futures of the two drivers, especially after Mercedes sought to secure reigning world champion Max Verstappen from Red Bull earlier this year.
In late July, Verstappen publicly stated that he would remain with Red Bull until at least the end of 2026. This announcement suggested that Mercedes’ line-up would remain unchanged, although it took additional time for the official contracts to be finalized. Notably, the specifics regarding the duration of Russell and Antonelli’s contracts were not disclosed, leaving the possibility open for a future pursuit of Verstappen beginning in 2027.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Confirming our driver line-up was always just a matter of when, not if. We wanted to take our time, handle the negotiations properly, and make sure everyone, on all sides, was happy. I’m pleased we have done that.” Wolff highlighted the strong partnership between Russell and Antonelli, indicating the team’s commitment to success as they focus on the remaining six races of the current season and the upcoming regulatory changes in 2026.
Russell, who recently celebrated his fifth career victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, shared his enthusiasm for the future. “I am really proud to be continuing our journey together,” the 27-year-old driver stated. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming regulatory changes, describing it as “one of the largest regulation changes in the sport’s history.” Russell aims to build upon what he considers his strongest season to date.
Antonelli, a 19-year-old rookie, has faced challenges during his debut season in Formula 1. Initially regarded as a generational talent, he has struggled to meet the high expectations associated with his appointment as a successor to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Despite finishing ahead of Antonelli in all 18 races this season, Russell has praised his teammate. Antonelli has accumulated 88 championship points compared to Russell’s 237 points.
Following a mid-season slump, Antonelli has shown signs of improvement, achieving top-five finishes in the last two races. “I’m super excited to be continuing with the team,” he remarked, reflecting on the lessons learned throughout the season. He noted that both the successes and challenges have contributed to his growth as a driver and teammate.
As the F1 season progresses, the focus shifts to North America, with the United States Grand Prix scheduled for October 17-19. Fans can follow the event live on Sky Sports F1, marking another critical juncture in the championship race.
