The women’s basketball team at Livingstone College faced a disappointing defeat at home, losing 66-42 to Virginia State University on January 4, 2024. The Blue Bears struggled throughout the game, trailing 35-19 at halftime and failing to recover in the second half.
Livingstone’s shooting performance was particularly poor, as the team managed to hit only 21.4 percent of its shots from the field. This lack of accuracy contributed to a total of 25 turnovers, a statistic that severely hindered their chances of success in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). In contrast, Virginia State demonstrated greater efficiency, shooting 40 percent overall, despite their struggles beyond the arc, where they went 1-for-11 on three-point attempts.
The game, held at New Trent Gym, attracted a crowd of 467 fans who witnessed Virginia State’s dominance on the boards, as they secured an impressive 60 rebounds compared to Livingstone’s total. The Trojans’ strong performance allowed them to maintain control throughout the match, with consistent scoring in each quarter: 17, 18, 17, and 14 points, respectively.
Jasiyah Crawford was the standout player for Livingstone, leading her team with 14 points. Breasia Coit contributed significantly with nine rebounds, while Boston Bates also added nine points to the scoreboard. The rest of the scoring effort was spread thin, with only a handful of players contributing points. The final score reflected the challenges Livingstone faced in this encounter.
Livingstone now holds a record of 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the CIAA, while Virginia State improves to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Blue Bears will need to regroup and address their shooting woes and turnover issues as they prepare for their next contest.
