Lions’ Isaac TeSlaa Impresses Coaches with Rapid Growth

The Detroit Lions’ rookie receiver, Isaac TeSlaa, has emerged as a standout player in his first season, capturing the attention of coaches and fans alike. Despite not receiving the anticipated volume of targets, TeSlaa has demonstrated remarkable consistency, catching nearly every pass thrown his way throughout the season. His performance has sparked interest in how he will develop alongside fellow receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams moving forward.

In a challenging playoff elimination game against the Minnesota Vikings on December 25, 2023, TeSlaa showcased his skills with a spectacular touchdown catch. He leaped to secure the ball, battling through contact from two defenders, which brought his season total to six touchdowns. The performance solidified his reputation as a reliable target for Lions quarterbacks.

Lions offensive coordinator John Morton, a former receiver himself, praised TeSlaa for his versatility. “Let me tell you something, run and pass, he can do it all. He’s tough, he’s physical, he’s smart,” Morton stated. “I just love the hands. You could put the ball anywhere.” TeSlaa, selected in the third round of the April draft from the University of Arkansas, has stepped up significantly as injuries to tight ends Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright have limited the Lions’ red-zone options.

Coach Dan Campbell highlighted TeSlaa’s growth over the season, saying, “He’s probably grown more than anybody has throughout the year, as far as our young guys. He’s grown the most.” Campbell emphasized TeSlaa’s intelligence and resilience, noting that the team has progressively expanded his responsibilities. “Every week, we’ve been able to put more and more on him,” Campbell added, commending TeSlaa for breaking through the typical rookie barriers.

TeSlaa’s ability to make contested catches has set him apart. Out of the 26 targets he has received this season, nine have been contested, and he has successfully caught five. This performance puts him just behind St. Brown, who has caught nine of his 21 contested targets. Over the season, TeSlaa has amassed 15 receptions for 221 yards in addition to his six touchdowns.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff expressed optimism about TeSlaa’s development. “He really has turned it on this last quarter/third of the season,” Goff said. “Things are starting to click for him, it’s all starting to fall into place a little bit.” Goff hopes this momentum continues into the next season.

TeSlaa’s potential is further amplified by the presence of St. Brown and Williams, who bring distinct skill sets to the Lions’ offense. This trio could become a formidable force, adding pressure to opposing defenses. Morton remarked, “The sky is the limit with those guys.” Williams echoed this sentiment, stating, “We got a lot of types of players. You got speed, you got big bodies, we can do everything.”

Despite his impressive rookie season, coaches recognize that TeSlaa has room for improvement. While his ability to secure contested catches is commendable, the Lions aim to enhance his route-running and short-area quickness. Scottie Montgomery, the Lions’ receivers coach and assistant head coach, noted, “We got to do a really good job working on his short-area quickness.” He emphasized the importance of creating separation to maximize TeSlaa’s effectiveness on the field.

As the Lions prepare for the future, TeSlaa’s continued development will be critical. His combination of size, athleticism, and skill positions him as a key player in the Lions’ offensive strategy moving forward. With the support of established players like St. Brown and Williams, and under the guidance of coaches, TeSlaa is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming seasons.
