The Landrum Cardinals girls varsity tennis team achieved a significant milestone on November 4, 2023, by winning the Upper State Championship against Clinton with a score of 4-2. This victory at their home courts secures their position in the SCHSL 1A/2A Girls Tennis State Finals, showcasing the team’s remarkable performance throughout the season.
Completing the regular season with an impressive overall record of 19-1, the Cardinals dominated their region, finishing undefeated at 6-0 to capture the Class AA, Region 1 title. Their path to the Upper State Championship included a series of dominant playoff performances, including a decisive 6-0 victory over Saluda High School in the second round, followed by another commanding win against Whitmire High School, also by a score of 6-0.
Key to their success in the championship match was Amelia Campbell, who was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance against Clinton. Alongside Campbell, teammates Ilana Taylor and Eva Burnett have also been recognized as Players of the Match during the playoffs, demonstrating the depth and talent within the Landrum program.
The Cardinals’ standout players have consistently excelled throughout the season. In singles, sophomore Ilana Taylor boasts a record of 10-2, while freshman Ellis Burnett has made a significant impact with an impressive 9-2 record in her singles matches. The doubles team of Eva Burnett and Ilana Taylor has proven to be an effective combination, complemented by the strong performances of Carlyn Fowler and Kendall Wilcox in the second doubles team, further solidifying the team’s competitive edge.
As the Cardinals prepare for the state finals, they will face the Lower State Champion, Academic Magnet High School, which enters the match with a record of 17-7. The finals are scheduled for November 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis Center, located at 1120 Fort Congaree Trail, Cayce, SC.
The determination and skill demonstrated by the Landrum Cardinals throughout the season have set high expectations for their upcoming match, as they aim to secure the state title.
