The boys’ soccer team from St. Clair Shores Lake Shore achieved a significant victory on March 15, 2024, defeating Madison Heights Lamphere 3-1 in the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division. This win marks an important step toward securing the league championship, with only two weeks left in the regular season.
Lake Shore’s performance has improved as they now hold a record of 8 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses, positioning themselves at 5-1-1 in league play. With this victory, the Shorians have accumulated 16 points, placing them in a strong position as they aim for their first league title since 2016. “We still have a ways to go. We have to win out,” stated Lake Shore coach David Lount, emphasizing the challenges that lie ahead. The Shorians face tough competition from teams like Warren Mott and Clawson, both of whom are closely trailing in the standings.
In the match against Lamphere, Lake Shore took control early, scoring with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. Senior midfielder Mekhi Curry skillfully assisted senior forward Avery Curtis, who found the back of the net with a precise shot. The Shorians extended their lead when Patrick Farley converted a penalty kick, bringing the score to 2-0.
Lamphere, with a record of 5 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, responded late in the game. Sophomore forward Aleksandr Chirkov successfully executed a penalty kick, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, Lake Shore sealed the match with Farley’s second penalty kick, ensuring a definitive 3-1 victory.
Lake Shore outperformed Lamphere in several statistics, including shots on goal, where they recorded 11 to Lamphere’s 4. The Shorians also held a narrow edge in corner kicks, with a total of 5 compared to Lamphere’s 4. Coach Lount credited his senior players for their experience and leadership, which have been crucial in tight matches. “We have 15 seniors that want to do well. We are taking it one game at a time,” he remarked.
On the other hand, Lamphere’s first-year coach Rachel Vickers acknowledged the challenges her team faces, balancing varying skill levels among players. “They have a lot of hustle and heart. But sometimes, at the end of games, it can be a challenge for us as a group,” Vickers explained. She highlighted the need for her players to work on teamwork and combination plays as they strive to improve in a competitive league where close matches are common.
As the season progresses, Lake Shore is focused on maintaining momentum and securing victories in their remaining matches to achieve their championship goal. Meanwhile, Lamphere is dedicated to developing their skills and fostering teamwork as they continue to compete in the league.
