Jaxon Smith-Njigba Powers Seahawks Offense Ahead of Playoffs

The Seattle Seahawks are poised for a significant playoff challenge, bolstered by the standout performance of wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. With the team set to face the San Francisco 49ers on March 9, 2024, Smith-Njigba’s explosive playmaking ability has positioned him as one of the leading receivers in the league.

In his third NFL season, Smith-Njigba has redefined expectations, particularly after the trade of former star receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This move, orchestrated by Seahawks general manager John Schneider, created an opportunity for Smith-Njigba to demonstrate his versatility and skill across all receiver positions.

When asked about his favorite route, Smith-Njigba expressed a preference for the go route, which underscores his aggressive playing style. “It’s beat them at the line,” he explained. “I think my releases are one of the best. So, winning at the line and taking it deep.” His ability to dominate at the line of scrimmage and execute deep plays has contributed significantly to his impressive season.

With a record-setting 1,793 receiving yards, Smith-Njigba holds the eighth-most yards in a single season in NFL history. He also achieved nine games with at least 100 receiving yards, leading the league in that category. His performance has not only set franchise records but has also elevated the Seahawks’ offensive game, which averages 28.4 points per game, ranking third in the NFL.

Historic Transition and Impactful Collaboration

Smith-Njigba’s transition from a traditional slot receiver to an outside receiver has been seamless. He led the NFL in both catches of at least 20 yards and 40-plus yards, showcasing his capability to make explosive plays. In 2024, he led the league with 956 receiving yards from the slot and 1,378 receiving yards when aligned out wide, according to Next Gen Stats.

The partnership between Smith-Njigba and quarterback Sam Darnold has been particularly fruitful. Their chemistry on the field is evident, especially in play-action scenarios. The duo connected 31 times for 723 yards and six touchdowns on play-action plays this season, making them the only quarterback-receiver pair to surpass 700 yards in this category during the Next Gen Stats era.

“I watched film on his game as soon as we got him,” Smith-Njigba remarked regarding Darnold. “Just being together and getting reps has helped us develop an elite competitive spirit.” Their shared ambition and dedication to excellence have become a driving force for the Seahawks as they prepare for the postseason.

Recognition and Expectations

Smith-Njigba’s exceptional season has earned him a spot on the Associated Press All-Pro first team, further solidifying his status among the elite wide receivers in the league. His work ethic and commitment to improvement have been pivotal in his rise. “I always go into the offseason wanting to get bigger, faster, and stronger,” he stated.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald emphasized Smith-Njigba’s unique skill set and competitive nature. “There are a lot of great receivers in this league who don’t have as diverse of a skill set as he does,” Macdonald noted. “His work ethic and his competitiveness are what set him apart.”

As the Seahawks gear up for their crucial playoff matchup, Smith-Njigba’s ability to deliver in high-stakes situations will be vital. With the NFC Championship Game within reach, the team and their fans are counting on his continued excellence to propel them forward.

With a blend of talent, hard work, and a competitive spirit, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is not only making a name for himself but also leading the Seattle Seahawks into a promising playoff run.
