Jacob Laverman has transformed his early life on a farm in Ocheyedan, Iowa, into a thriving career in sports medicine, culminating in a prominent role as Director of Football Rehabilitation and Assistant Athletic Trainer at Indiana University. His journey, which began with humble roots and a commitment to hard work, has taken him from local fields to the prestigious Big Ten sidelines.
Growing up on a farm instilled in Laverman a strong work ethic. He learned early on that dedication and perseverance were essential to achieving goals. After high school, Laverman faced uncertainty regarding his future. With various career paths ahead, he sought a financially viable option that would allow him to explore his interests. Minnesota West Community & Technical College became that stepping stone, offering a solid foundation both academically and athletically.
“I probably wouldn’t admit this to my parents, but I submitted my Minnesota West application on the very last day it was due—and somehow, everything fell into place just as it was meant to,” Laverman recalled. Supported by family ties and a strong sense of practicality, he not only earned his Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts but also played one year of golf and two years of baseball.
At Minnesota West, Laverman thrived in a supportive environment characterized by small class sizes and accessible professors. Mentors like Joel Krekelberg, who taught Sports Injuries and Athletic Training courses, sparked his interest in sports medicine, shaping his career aspirations. Laverman fondly remembers a personal milestone when his face appeared on a campus billboard, a proud moment facilitated by his cousin Amber, who worked at the college.
“My first college experience had the support systems in place and made it easy to succeed,” Laverman stated. This groundwork prepared him for his next challenge: transferring to a four-year university. He ultimately chose Iowa State University, recognized for its reputable Athletic Training program and extensive alumni network.
In 2012, during his first fall at Iowa State, Laverman began working with college football as an athletic training student. He pursued summer internships, applying to all 32 NFL teams. The Indianapolis Colts responded, leading to an interview and, ultimately, an opportunity that would further his career. This connection was significantly influenced by Iowa State’s networking capabilities, which also led him to secure a position with the Seattle Seahawks in 2016.
“The Colts and Seahawks staffs are among the best in the business, and I work to model my career after the professionalism and excellence they exemplify,” Laverman explained. His time with the Colts in 2013 was particularly formative, as he was inspired by Erin Barill, the Director of Rehabilitation. Her mentorship reinforced his ambition to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
Laverman applied to Washington University in St. Louis, known for its top-tier physical therapy program, and was accepted. As graduation approached, he completed a seasonal role as a physical therapist and athletic trainer for the Colts in 2018. This experience solidified his qualifications for high-level football rehabilitation.
By 2023, Laverman had taken on his current position at Indiana University, where he is now in his seventh season. His influence is evident in the recovery and performance of athletes, including notable players like Michael Penix Jr. and Kurtis Rourke. Laverman’s hard work culminated in Indiana’s victory in the 2025 Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium, a moment he celebrated with family.
“Every day, I remind myself to be grateful for the incredible opportunities I’ve been given, and I carry with me the belief that I belong wherever I choose to go,” Laverman expressed. He emphasizes the importance of building relationships and maintaining an open mind in a fast-paced and demanding profession.
Laverman, a first-generation college graduate, retains deep gratitude for his upbringing, where hard work was a family expectation. The lessons learned on the farm have equipped him with resilience, allowing him to succeed in a profession that demands both skill and dedication.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with several elite quarterbacks throughout my career,” he noted, highlighting the importance of mentorship and collaboration in his journey. For Laverman, the true rewards come from behind-the-scenes moments of triumph, assisting athletes through adversity, and celebrating collective success.
As he continues to shape the future of sports medicine, Laverman remains committed to giving back and helping the next generation of professionals thrive, proving that hard work and determination can lead to remarkable achievements.
