The San Francisco Giants showcased an impressive performance at Oracle Park on Wednesday night, defeating the Chicago Cubs with a decisive score of 12-3. This victory marks the Giants’ fourth consecutive win, their first streak of this length since July 5-8. The team hit four home runs during the match, a feat not seen in quite some time at their home ground.
Rafael Devers was a standout player, contributing significantly to the Giants’ offensive display with two home runs. Matt Chapman and Heliot Ramos also added solo homers, while rookie pitcher Carson Whisenhunt earned his second career victory, allowing three runs over five innings.
Devers initiated the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, bringing his season total to 26. Despite this early lead, the Cubs responded quickly. In the top of the second, Nico Hoerner hit a three-run homer, giving Chicago a brief 3-1 lead. However, the Giants quickly regained control. In the bottom of the second, Devers hit an RBI ground-rule double, followed by sacrifice flies from Willy Adames and Dominic Smith, putting San Francisco back on top.
The game took a turn in the fifth inning when a series of unusual plays allowed the Giants to extend their lead to 7-3. With Devers on first, Smith hit a single to center field. As Devers rounded second, he slowed down, allowing Pete Crow-Armstrong‘s throw to reach third base ahead of him. However, Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw mishandled the throw, enabling Devers to reach safely.
In a bizarre moment, Chapman then blooped a single to right field, which fell in front of the Cubs’ Kyle Tucker. Devers scored easily, and while Smith initially stopped at third, Tucker’s throw struck Chapman’s helmet and bounced away, allowing Smith to dash home as Chapman advanced to second. Casey Schmitt capped off the inning with a single that brought Chapman home, increasing the Giants’ lead.
The Giants continued to capitalize on their momentum. Devers hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, followed by Chapman who marked his 200th career home run with a solo shot in the seventh. The eighth inning saw Ramos hit a solo home run off position player Reese McGuire, further solidifying the Giants’ dominance in the game.
This performance not only reflects the Giants’ offensive capabilities but also their resilience, as they navigate through the season with renewed energy. The team will look to maintain this winning streak as they continue their campaign.
