For a quarter of a century, Friends of Florence has dedicated itself to the preservation of Italy’s rich artistic heritage. The nonprofit organization has raised millions of dollars to restore invaluable art and architecture in Florence, a city renowned for its cultural legacy. Founded to safeguard the artistic treasures of Florence, Friends of Florence has supported numerous restoration projects in major museums, including the Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David. Additionally, the organization has funded restorations in churches and public spaces throughout Tuscany.
Simonetta Brandolini, president of Friends of Florence, emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, “Time really deteriorates works of art. We basically are here to conserve, protect, safeguard the art and culture of Florence and Tuscany.” The organization employs skilled artisans and conservators, many of whom are recognized as leaders in the field. Their meticulous work often requires years for a single piece, reflecting the deep commitment to understanding the artistry behind each masterpiece.
In her role as a conservator of paintings, Sandra Pucci expressed her passion for the craft, stating, “My desire is to deeply understand the soul of the artist.” This philosophy underpins the painstaking processes involved in restoration, ensuring that the cultural significance of each artwork is honored.
The impact of Friends of Florence extends beyond individual projects. Timothy Verdon, director of the Cathedral Museum del Duomo, praised the organization, saying, “They have intervened to make it possible for those of us who live here who love this city to continue to present these masterpieces to visitors in their most beautiful form. They are the new patrons of the Renaissance.”
Since its inception, Friends of Florence has completed over 450 projects, restoring a diverse array of sculptures, paintings, frescoes, and architectural details across the region. Brandolini characterized this effort as “enormous” and “infinite,” highlighting the pride that donors feel in contributing to the preservation of what she describes as “one of the real masterpieces of all time.”
Friends of Florence continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the artistic heritage of Florence remains vibrant and accessible for future generations. Through their dedicated efforts, the organization not only restores art but also enriches the cultural landscape of Tuscany, fostering a deeper appreciation for Italy’s artistic legacy.
