The Dos Pueblos High School girls’ water polo team faced a narrow defeat against Agoura High School, losing 10-9 in the CIF-SS Division 1 Quarterfinals on March 15, 2023, at the Elings Aquatic Center. A slow start hindered the Chargers, as Agoura established an early lead that they managed to maintain throughout the match.
Agoura capitalized on its opportunities, securing three penalty shots and a power-play goal to jump ahead 6-2 by the end of the first period. The visitors continued to dominate, extending their lead to 9-5 by halftime. Agoura’s ability to draw exclusions and convert chances at the 5-meter line proved crucial, with standout player Peyton Rosenthal scoring four times from penalty shots.
Dos Pueblos coach Chris Parrish reflected on the team’s struggles in the first half, stating, “We just had an abysmal first half. The defense wasn’t working, and there was a lack of communication in the pool. I think it was essentially my fault having them run a different defense than they’ve been running all season.” Despite the challenging start, Parrish acknowledged the resilience of his team.
As the second half began, Dos Pueblos regrouped, tightening its defense and limiting Agoura to just one goal over the final two periods. A significant change in goal saw regular starter Reagan Mack return after recovering from a shoulder injury. Mack’s presence sparked the team’s comeback, as her precise outlet passes facilitated transition goals and her critical saves kept the Chargers in contention.
Leading the charge for Dos Pueblos was Deveraux Wigo, who scored five goals, including three during a determined rally that brought the score to 10-9 midway through the fourth quarter. Keira McAvoy also contributed with two goals as the Chargers’ defense made key stops to create one final opportunity.
In a tense conclusion, Wigo launched a long-range shot under pressure in the closing seconds. The attempt deflected off a defender, grazed the underside of the crossbar, and was ultimately cleared by Agoura’s goalkeeper Emma Lee Webber, securing the victory for Agoura.
With this win, Agoura improved its season record to 23-7, while Dos Pueblos concluded its campaign with a commendable 19-8 record. The match highlighted both the challenges and potential of high school water polo, leaving a lasting impression on players and fans alike.
