Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez is headed to Minnesota to finalize a contract with Minnesota United FC, according to a source who confirmed the news to the Pioneer Press. The 34-year-old player is expected to sign a short-term deal, pending approval from Major League Soccer (MLS). While the exact duration of the contract remains undisclosed, it is anticipated to extend at least through the mid-summer FIFA World Cup break.
Rodriguez, who is a free agent after his previous stint with Club Leon in Mexico’s Liga MX concluded in late 2025, will not occupy one of the club’s Designated Player slots. Despite this, he is likely to command a substantial salary. The Loons will not incur a transfer fee for his rights, as he is currently available without a club.
Rodriguez’s arrival would mark a significant moment for Minnesota United, as he would become the most recognizable player in the club’s history, spanning ten seasons in MLS. His illustrious career includes playing for renowned clubs such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He was also the top scorer at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, solidifying his status as a global football talent.
The midfielder’s move comes as he aims to reclaim his position as a top player for Colombia ahead of the upcoming World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Rodriguez has been without competitive club action since November 8, and his readiness to participate in matches is still uncertain.
Once fit, Rodriguez is expected to bolster the Loons’ offensive lineup, potentially partnering with Joaquín Pereyra and forward Kelvin Yeboah. The team is gearing up for its regular season, which kicks off in just over two weeks.
Minnesota United will participate in three preseason friendlies at the Coachella Valley Invitational in Indio, California, beginning this Saturday against Sporting Kansas City. Following that, they will face D.C. United on February 14. The Loons’ season opener is scheduled for February 21 against Austin FC, with their home opener at Allianz Field set for February 28 against FC Cincinnati.
With the potential addition of Rodriguez, Minnesota United aims to make a significant impact in the upcoming season, showcasing their ambition to compete at a higher level in the league.
