College Football Week 10 Preview: Key Matchups and Predictions

As college football enters Week 10, three highly anticipated matchups feature ranked teams, promising thrilling action on the field. The weekend includes significant encounters such as the Vanderbilt Commodores facing the Texas Longhorns, the Miami Hurricanes taking on the SMU Mustangs, and the Navy Midshipmen squaring off against the North Texas Mean Green. These games carry major implications for the College Football Playoff landscape, and fans are eager to see how these teams will perform.

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Texas Longhorns

The No. 9 Vanderbilt Commodores will clash with the No. 20 Texas Longhorns on Saturday at 12 PM ET on ABC. This game has substantial playoff ramifications for both teams. If Vanderbilt secures a win, they may only need to triumph in two of their remaining three games to clinch a playoff berth, marking a historic season for the program. Conversely, Texas, aiming to maintain their playoff hopes, must win out to secure a spot in the postseason.

Key to watch when Vanderbilt has the ball is their offensive line’s ability to withstand Texas’ formidable front seven. The Longhorns’ defense ranks fifth nationally in expected points added (EPA) per play and boasts standout players such as edge defender Colin Simmons and linebacker Anthony Hill Jr.. Despite Vanderbilt’s capable quarterback, Diego Pavia, the team’s offensive line struggles, ranking among the lowest in the Power Four.

When Texas has the ball, questions abound regarding their running game’s effectiveness, especially with quarterback Arch Manning possibly sidelined. Texas has struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack, ranking 100th nationally in rushing grade. To succeed, they will rely on their talented running backs to step up.

Predictions for this tightly contested matchup vary, with one analyst projecting a narrow Texas victory at 20-17, while another forecasts a Vanderbilt win at 24-20.

Miami Hurricanes at SMU Mustangs

The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes visit the SMU Mustangs at 12 PM ET on ESPN on Saturday. After suffering a setback against Louisville, the Hurricanes rebounded with a decisive 42-7 victory over Stanford. This game poses a significant challenge as the Mustangs, at 5-3, remain in contention for the ACC title.

Miami’s offensive line, ranked third nationally, faces a stiff test against SMU’s elite defensive front. The Mustangs have excelled in run defense, making this trench battle crucial. Miami’s quarterback, Carson Beck, must navigate a tough defensive challenge to lead his team to victory.

On the flip side, if SMU aims to exploit Miami’s defensive weaknesses, they must protect quarterback Kevin Jennings effectively. The Mustangs’ offensive line ranks second in pass-blocking efficiency, which will be tested against Miami’s pressure-heavy scheme.

Predictions for this matchup lean toward a Miami win, with projected scores ranging from 31-17 to 27-21.

Navy Midshipmen at North Texas Mean Green

In another crucial matchup, the Navy Midshipmen face the North Texas Mean Green at 12 PM ET on ESPN2. Navy enters this game with a perfect 7-0 record and is vying for a spot in the College Football Playoff. North Texas, with odds of +500 to win the conference, aims to assert themselves as a strong contender.

Navy’s dynamic run game, led by quarterback Blake Horvath, will be pivotal. The Midshipmen’s complexity in their running schemes could challenge North Texas’ defense, which has struggled against the run. Conversely, North Texas must capitalize on its ability to protect quarterback Drew Mestemaker against Navy’s aggressive pass rush.

Expect this game to be a high-scoring affair, with predictions indicating a 37-30 North Texas victory from one analyst, while another sees Navy triumphing 42-35.

As the weekend unfolds, these matchups offer immense excitement and potential playoff implications, setting the stage for thrilling college football action.
