The Colfax-Mingo volleyball team secured a victory against Chariton at the Pleasantville tournament on March 15, 2024. This win ended a challenging five-match losing streak for the Tigerhawks, who only managed to win one of their four matches during the event. Their sole success came in a hard-fought encounter against Chariton, which they won in three sets.
In the match against Chariton, the Tigerhawks triumphed with scores of 15-21, 22-20, and 15-12. Katelyn Steenhoek stood out, contributing four assists, four kills, five digs, and two aces. Hope Allen also played a vital role with five assists, three kills, and three digs. Other notable players included Grace Hunsberger, who recorded four kills, four digs, and two aces, and Grace Allen, who added four digs and two aces. The team collectively excelled in serving, achieving a success rate of 44-of-51 with nine aces.
Despite the victory against Chariton, the Tigerhawks faced tough competition in their other matches. They were defeated by PCM, Southeast Warren, and the host team, Pleasantville. In their match against Pleasantville, the Tigerhawks lost in straight sets with scores of 21-12 and 21-17. Grace Allen led the defense with seven digs and two assists, while Hunsberger contributed five kills and two digs. The team managed 20-of-26 in serves, but Pleasantville outperformed them with a remarkable 37-of-39 serving accuracy, including 13 aces.
The Tigerhawks’ match against Southeast Warren proved equally challenging, resulting in a 21-14, 21-11 loss. Steenhoek was again a key performer with four assists, three kills, and two aces. Collectively, the team finished 22-of-26 in serves with four aces. Southeast Warren is notable for its impressive record, boasting 31 wins, the highest in Class 1A.
Their final match against PCM, who have now secured four consecutive wins over Colfax-Mingo, ended in a 21-18, 21-8 defeat. Grace Allen once more led the team defensively, achieving seven digs. The team served well, finishing 20-of-21 with three aces, with Steenhoek perfecting her serves at 7-of-7.
The absence of senior hitter Britney Keeney, who was attending her brother’s wedding, was felt during the tournament. The team, now with a record of 8-10, demonstrated resilience in their lone victory, providing a glimmer of hope for future matches.
