Colfax-Mingo Football Falls to Martensdale-St. Marys 34-6

Colfax-Mingo’s football team faced a challenging match against Martensdale-St. Marys on October 6, 2023, falling 34-6 in a Class A District 6 contest. The Blue Devils showcased a strong defensive performance, limiting the Tigerhawks to just 172 total yards and recording 5.5 sacks throughout the game.

The two teams met for the first time since 2019, with Martensdale-St. Marys dominating the ground game, rushing for a total of 169 yards. The Blue Devils’ offense was spearheaded by Brady Baker, who rushed for 150 yards and scored three touchdowns, showcasing his ability to break through the Tigerhawk defense.

Colfax-Mingo’s offense struggled to find momentum. Fisher Grove led the Tigerhawks with 71 yards on 13 carries, while Wyatt Carpenter contributed 65 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. Quarterback Camden Cunningham passed for 28 yards but faced difficulties, throwing one interception. Cunningham also made a notable defensive impact, recording a career-high 13 tackles, along with three tackles for loss and one forced fumble.

Defensive Highlights and Special Teams Impact

Martensdale-St. Marys’ defense was relentless, with several players making significant contributions. Caleb Puderbaugh was particularly disruptive, posting six tackles, five sacks, and one forced fumble. Trenton Jellison added to the defensive effort with 8.5 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss, while Ira Hawk contributed seven tackles.

The Blue Devils also excelled in special teams, as Hunter Dooley made an impressive 67-yard punt return, further swinging momentum in their favor. Baker also showcased his versatility with a 45-yard punt return, reinforcing the Blue Devils’ control of the game.

Colfax-Mingo’s struggles continued as they fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the district, effectively eliminating them from postseason contention. The Blue Devils improved to 2-4, with a record of 1-4 in the district, highlighting their determination to turn the season around.

This match not only reflected the capabilities of Martensdale-St. Marys but also underscored the challenges facing Colfax-Mingo as they seek to regroup in the remaining games of the season.
