Carson Wentz Reflects on Past as He Prepares to Face Eagles

As the Minnesota Vikings gear up to face the Philadelphia Eagles on October 8, 2023, quarterback Carson Wentz shared his reflections on his time with the Eagles, which he described as feeling like “multiple lifetimes ago.” Wentz, who played five seasons in Philadelphia, expressed a sense of gratitude and growth from his experiences there.

Wentz’s career took a dramatic turn after being selected second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He began as a promising player, quickly becoming an MVP contender in 2017 before an ACL injury sidelined him. Following his injury, Nick Foles stepped in, leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory. Wentz’s subsequent seasons were marred by injuries and challenges, ultimately resulting in his benching for Jalen Hurts during the 2020 season.

Reflecting on this journey, Wentz told reporters, “You live, you learn, and you grow, and that’s all you can do.” His time in Philadelphia was significant not just professionally but personally, as he experienced major life milestones, including marriage and fatherhood.

In preparation for the upcoming game, Wentz is competing with 22-year-old J.J. McCarthy for the starting quarterback position. McCarthy is recovering from an ankle injury, leaving Wentz as a potential starter if the team deems McCarthy unfit. Wentz noted that his preparation routine remains consistent regardless of whether he starts, emphasizing the importance of his approach to studying plays and maintaining his physical condition.

When asked about facing his former team, Wentz stated, “Not really,” indicating that his connection to the Eagles has changed over time. He acknowledged the respect he holds for the organization but emphasized that the team has transformed since his departure.

Wentz’s tenure with the Eagles concluded when he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, followed by a season with the Washington Commanders. After brief stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, he finds himself back on the field, preparing to face the franchise that drafted him.

As Wentz approaches this pivotal matchup, he reflects on his past with gratitude while focusing on his present challenges. “Life is just different,” he remarked, acknowledging the lessons learned throughout his career. The upcoming game against the Eagles promises to be a significant moment in Wentz’s evolving narrative as he seeks to make an impact once again on the field.
