On March 4, 2024, Byron Storer was officially introduced as the new special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. This announcement marks a significant milestone in Storer’s career, which has transitioned from the family bus business to the NFL coaching ranks.
A Journey of Choices and Coaching Aspirations
Storer’s journey could have taken a very different direction. After spending several years at Storer Transportation, a company founded by his great-grandfather, he made the pivotal decision to pursue coaching. “Ultimately after about one or two years in the bus business, I knew that I wanted to be a coach,” Storer shared during his introduction. This decision was not without its challenges; he faced a difficult conversation with his father about leaving the family business.
His NFL career began as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he primarily contributed on special teams. Despite facing multiple knee injuries that limited his playing time to just 25 games, Storer’s connection with long-time special teams coach Rich Bisaccia opened doors to his coaching future. While on injured reserve in 2009, he began evaluating players and providing insights to Bisaccia, effectively planting the seeds for his coaching career.
From Player to Coach: Building Experience
After his playing career ended, Storer quickly stepped into coaching roles, starting with the Buccaneers as an assistant special teams coach before moving to the San Diego Chargers. His coaching path was interrupted when his father encouraged him to return to the family business, where he worked in various roles, including operations manager. “It was a learning experience,” he noted, referring to his time in the bus industry.
Despite the success he found in the family business, Storer felt the pull of coaching once again. When Jon Gruden was re-hired by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2018, he brought Bisaccia back as his special teams coordinator. Bisaccia quickly reached out to Storer, leading to his return to the NFL.
Storer followed Bisaccia to Las Vegas when the Raiders relocated in 2020, and after a brief stint there, he accompanied Bisaccia to the Green Bay Packers. This time, Storer found himself stepping out of Bisaccia’s shadow to take on a role with the Browns, a team with which he had no prior connections.
Even as his mentor resigned from the Packers, Storer remained committed to his new role. “I just said, ‘You know what, coach, going through the process here in Cleveland and getting to know coach Todd Monken and general manager Andrew Berry, Cleveland’s where I want to be,’” he explained. This decision underscores his determination to carve out his own identity within the league.
As Storer embarks on this new chapter with the Browns, he carries with him a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to elevating the team’s special teams unit. With the backing of his mentor and the lessons learned throughout his diverse career, Storer is poised to make a significant impact in Cleveland.
