The Buffalo Bills have appointed Bobby April III as their new outside linebackers coach, marking his return to the NFL after several years in college football. April previously served as the defensive coordinator at Stanford University before taking a position with the Minnesota Gophers this offseason. His hiring comes shortly after the Bills secured Jim Leonhard as their defensive coordinator, a colleague from their time at the University of Wisconsin.
April’s transition back to the NFL comes after a successful period at Stanford, where he held the defensive coordinator role from 2023 to 2025. His tenure ended when new head coach Tavita Pritchard opted not to retain several coaching staff members. Prior to his time at Stanford, April worked with the Bills from 2015 to 2016, coaching linebackers under former head coach Rex Ryan.
During his career, April has accumulated a wealth of experience in the NFL. He began as a defensive quality control coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2011 to 2012, then moved to the New York Jets, where he served in various roles, including head linebackers coach in 2014. After his stint with the Bills, April returned to college football, coaching for eight years before re-entering the professional level.
April’s Coaching Journey and Responsibilities
April’s football journey began at his alma mater, Louisiana-Lafayette, where he started as a student assistant in 2004. He later became a graduate assistant at Tulane University from 2005 to 2006. His first full-time coaching position came in 2007 when he was hired as the special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Portland State. He further developed his skills at Nicholls State before transitioning to the NFL.
With the Bills, April will aim to enhance the outside linebackers’ performance, contributing to a defense that has demonstrated effectiveness in recent seasons. His experience, particularly alongside Leonhard, who was defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Wisconsin from 2018 to 2022, is expected to bring a strategic edge to the Bills’ coaching staff.
The timing of April’s return is notable, as this offseason has seen an influx of coaching vacancies across the league. He will have the opportunity to prove his capabilities in the upcoming 2026 season, potentially positioning himself for a future as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.
Aiming for Super Bowl Glory
The Bills have experienced significant success in the regular season in recent years but have struggled to advance to the Super Bowl. April’s hiring is part of a broader effort to elevate the franchise and achieve its first Super Bowl victory. The Bills won two championships in the American Football League (AFL) in 1964 and 1965, but have yet to secure a title since the NFL merger.
With an experienced team in place, including April and Leonhard, the Bills are preparing for a new chapter aimed at turning the corner in the playoffs. The franchise’s leadership and coaching staff will work collaboratively to harness the talent of their players and build a formidable defense, an essential component in their quest for a championship.
