The Buffalo Bills are actively considering former quarterback Philip Rivers for their head coaching position, with an interview recently conducted at team owner Terry Pegula’s winter residence in Florida. This development has sparked interest, although initial reports suggested that the Bills were not viewing Rivers as a serious candidate. However, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, this assessment may not fully reflect the team’s stance.
During an appearance on NFL Network, Rapoport confirmed that Rivers was indeed interviewed for the role. “Philip Rivers interviewed in the last several days for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job, in person,” he stated. “That is real, this actually happened, and my understanding is this is under serious consideration.” Rapoport emphasized the positive feedback from the interview, indicating that Rivers performed exceptionally well. Despite his recent role as a high school head coach, Rivers has significant experience leading teams and has developed a network of connections within the league.
Rivers, now 44 years old, has previously stepped away from professional play but made a surprising return to the Indianapolis Colts late last season. Despite this brief return, he confirmed his intentions to remain retired from playing. His experience as a player and a coach at the high school level has raised questions about his suitability for the NFL head coaching role, particularly given the lack of collegiate or professional coaching experience.
Rivers and Allen’s Close Relationship
Reports indicate that Rivers and Bills quarterback Josh Allen share a strong relationship. Allen, who is heavily involved in the coaching search, is reportedly “sitting in for everything” during meetings with potential candidates and will have significant input in the selection process. This connection is bolstered by the fact that both players share the same agent, and Allen had the opportunity to work with Rivers leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft.
NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated highlighted that their ongoing relationship has allowed Allen to gain insight into Rivers’ coaching abilities. If Rivers is genuinely interested in coaching at the professional level, the opportunity to work with a talented quarterback like Allen could be appealing. However, appointing someone without extensive coaching experience could lead to scrutiny, particularly following the recent termination of former head coach Sean McDermott.
The Bills’ pursuit of a new head coach is a pivotal moment for the organization, particularly as they look to regain momentum in a highly competitive league. As the coaching search progresses, all eyes will be on how the Bills navigate this critical decision.
