The Buffalo Bills’ decision to replace longtime head coach Sean McDermott with Joe Brady has sparked considerable criticism from the fanbase, but General Manager Brandon Beane remains resolute. In a recent interview with Go Long, Beane addressed the backlash, emphasizing that the focus must be on making the right choices for the team, regardless of outside opinions.
The Bills terminated McDermott’s contract in January 2024, shortly after their defeat in the AFC Divisional Round against the Denver Broncos. This marked the end of a nine-year tenure for McDermott, during which the team achieved seven consecutive postseason appearances. Brady, who served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past three years, was appointed as the new head coach.
In his interview, Beane stated, “F— the outside. It’s about the right selection for this team. And if we win, they’ll love it.” This sentiment reflects a determination to prioritize team success over public sentiment.
Recent polling data from the Buffalo News reveals that over 75 percent of respondents disapproved of McDermott’s firing. Furthermore, less than 38 percent of participants believed Brady was the appropriate choice for head coach. Beane acknowledged the widespread criticism and recognized the potential impact on his own job security, saying, “If I’m wrong, the moving company will be at my house.”
He reiterated his commitment to making decisions based on what he believes is best for the organization. “I understand, and I’m not going to have regret of choosing someone to appease the outside if I thought it should have been something different,” he added. Beane expressed his determination to trust his instincts, stating, “I don’t want to be wrong — see him go somewhere else — when my gut told me it was Joe Brady. I’m never going to do that.”
The fallout from the coaching change has generated mixed reactions among the fanbase. Beane is acutely aware of the challenges ahead, stating, “I would love for everyone to cheer every move, but it’s not about winning the press conference. It’s about winning games over there.” His focus remains on cultivating a winning culture, even in the face of criticism.
With the Bills looking to rebuild and refocus under Brady’s leadership, the upcoming season will be critical for both the new head coach and Beane. The franchise aims to reassure its supporters that the changes made will ultimately lead to success on the field.
