The pair of bald eagles known as Jackie and Shadow have set a new record for the number of sticks gathered in a single day for their nest at Big Bear Lake, located in the mountains near Los Angeles. On November 22, 2023, the duo collected an impressive total of 28 sticks, surpassing their previous record of 25 sticks, which had stood for over three years.
These remarkable “nestorations” come as autumn progresses and serve as a preparation for the upcoming egg-laying season. During this time, both eagles actively gather materials to enhance the structure and security of their nest. The nonprofit organization that operates a live camera feed has made it possible for bird enthusiasts to closely observe the eagles during this busy period.
Jackie and Shadow’s nesting efforts involve multiple trips to gather sticks, with each bird flying into the nest carrying sizeable branches in their talons. On the record-breaking day, Jackie delivered 15 sticks, while Shadow followed closely with 13. Interestingly, it is possible that they brought even more than 28 sticks, as camera outages occurred due to cloudy weather, which limited the total count.
“The eagles often experience comical moments as they attempt to place their chosen sticks in the nest, showcasing their personalities in the process,”
said a representative from the organization managing the camera feed. Viewers have been captivated by the eagles’ antics as they negotiate the placement of their materials, often resulting in humorous outcomes.
As the holiday season approaches, Jackie and Shadow continue to focus on their domestic preparations, ensuring their nest is secure and ready for potential eggs. Historically, Jackie has laid her eggs around the end of January, marking the beginning of the much-anticipated “Egg Watch” period. This season is highly awaited by eagle enthusiasts, who are eager to witness the next chapter in the lives of these iconic birds.
The enthusiasm surrounding the nesting habits of Jackie and Shadow reflects a larger appreciation for wildlife and the natural world. Their story serves as a reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature, particularly in the face of changing seasons. As both humans and eagles prepare for the winter months, the dedication of Jackie and Shadow to their nest continues to inspire many.
