Barcelona has confirmed that 23-year-old defender Gerard Martín will not be leaving the club during this transfer window, despite receiving significant interest from other teams. According to a report by Diario SPORT, Martín’s agent received “two new offers” recently. Both the player and the club have expressed a firm desire for him to remain, considering his commitment to the team and Barcelona’s current circumstances.
Earlier in the transfer window, Barcelona was open to selling Martín, especially when Wolverhampton reportedly offered up to €15 million for his services. However, the departure of Iñigo Martínez has impacted the club’s defensive options. Losing another defender would further strain Barcelona’s lineup, which is already facing challenges.
The club’s financial constraints, particularly regarding Financial Fair Play regulations, limit their capacity to sign a high-level center-back. This situation has delayed Martín’s registration, preventing him from making his season debut. In preseason, head coach Hansi Flick experimented with Martín in a center-back role and appreciated his performance. Additionally, the emergence of Jofre Torrents provides Barcelona with depth at left-back, allowing Martín to be considered more for central defense.
As it stands, there is no intention from Martín to seek a transfer. However, Diario SPORT indicates that the situation could be reassessed in January. If Martín finds himself lacking playing time, he may consider options elsewhere to secure regular minutes. For now, both the player and Barcelona are aligned in their decision to stay put.
