The eighth edition of TEDx Gary is set to take place on October 18, 2023, at 6 p.m. in the Bergland Auditorium at Savannah Hall, located at Indiana University Northwest. This locally organized event continues the tradition of TEDx, where speakers share innovative ideas and personal stories in talks lasting no longer than 18 minutes. This year’s theme, “Space and Expectation,” promises to engage attendees with a diverse lineup of speakers addressing a wide array of topics.
Organized by married couple Jeffrey and McKenya Dilworth Smith, TEDx Gary first launched in 2020 with the theme “Using What You Have to Get What You Want.” Since then, it has gained traction, drawing international attention. Last year, Dr. Ravi Iyer‘s talk, “The Power of Intentional Focus,” became the most viewed TEDx talk, amassing over 2.4 million views.
The upcoming event features a rich roster of speakers, including Paulina Johnson from Detroit, Dr. Akemi Bailey Haynie, Dr. Kenichi Haynie, and Masayoshi Haynie from Chicago, as well as local talents like Sandra Carr and Kristy Carreon. Notably, the lineup also includes Kristine Szabo from Cannes, France, and Dr. Altovise Nicole Ferguson from Gary, showcasing a blend of perspectives and experiences.
Engaging Ideas and Community Impact
The talks will cover various subjects, from enhancing social media algorithms to creating safe spaces amid chaos. McKenya Dilworth Smith expressed enthusiasm, stating, “The evening will be filled with ideas worth sharing.” She highlighted the impressive backgrounds of the speakers, which range from corporate leaders to medical professionals and even a survivor of the Hiroshima attack.
Jeffrey Smith noted the event’s potential economic impact, as speakers travel from locations like Indianapolis and Michigan, contributing to the local economy by staying at nearby accommodations, dining at local restaurants, and shopping at small businesses. This aspect not only enhances community engagement but also promotes a positive narrative for the city of Gary.
Over the years, TEDx Gary has hosted over 35 speakers, all dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity. The Smiths’ mission is clear: to challenge, provoke, and advance the city of Gary through inspiring discussions.
Future Opportunities and Participation
In addition to this year’s event, TEDx Gary is already planning future gatherings. McKenya Dilworth Smith mentioned that individuals interested in becoming speakers can apply through a straightforward application process that opens in March and closes on May 16.
As TEDx Gary prepares for another exciting evening of enlightening talks, the commitment to showcasing a diverse array of voices and ideas remains at the forefront. This event not only highlights the potential for personal and community growth but also reinforces the significance of sharing impactful stories within a global framework.
