Students from Johns Hopkins University and Brown University have established an initiative called Letters Without Limits, which aims to connect volunteers with patients in palliative and hospice care to create “Legacy Letters.” These letters serve as a platform for patients to share their memories, values, and life lessons, preserving their unique stories that might otherwise fade away.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of humanism in medicine, reminding healthcare providers and society that every patient is more than their illness. The project seeks to amplify the voices of patients, affirming their experiences and the legacies they wish to leave behind.
Interview with Jesse Tetterton
Among those involved in the initiative is Jesse Tetterton, whose story exemplifies the spirit of Letters Without Limits. During a recent interview, Tetterton shared his infectious positivity and deep appreciation for life. His ability to see joy and purpose in every situation is evident in his reflections.
“Life always has meaning,” Tetterton states. “No matter where you go, life always has some meaning.” He likens life to a game of chess, emphasizing the importance of understanding oneself before making decisions. Tetterton’s narrative is rich with anecdotes from his childhood, where love and resilience shaped his outlook on life.
Life Lessons and Cherished Memories
Tetterton grew up in a loving household, recalling fond memories of his family during challenging times. “We didn’t feel the feeling of poorness,” he reflects, describing how his parents instilled a sense of joy despite financial hardships. He remembers a time when the family had only cheese and bread to eat, yet they transformed it into a cherished meal.
He recounts stories of helping an elderly neighbor, Mr. N., at his vegetable store, highlighting the values of kindness and community support. “He’d always say it the same way every time. ‘Go on about your business,’” Tetterton recalls with a smile.
Loss has also been a part of Tetterton’s journey. He reflects on the adoption of his sister T. and the tragic loss of another sister, P., in a fire. “Loss is part of life, but God’s truth is always around us,” he asserts, demonstrating his unwavering faith.
Tetterton’s experiences have shaped his understanding of love and friendship. He met his wife, Evelyn, at an epilepsy foundation, where they bonded over shared experiences. “Though our time together was shorter than we wanted, we had our good times,” he said, noting the love that remains even after her passing.
Sharing Music and Wisdom
Music and art are central to Tetterton’s expression of faith and love. He learned to play the guitar and uses it to share messages of positivity. “Music is great, but you got to learn how to see the meaning in the readings of words and music,” he explains, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful expression.
His wisdom extends to life’s journey, encouraging others to understand themselves deeply. Tetterton emphasizes the significance of personal responsibility and honesty in navigating life’s challenges. “When you make a move, be more conscious of how you make your move,” he advises, drawing parallels to chess.
As Tetterton reflects on his life, he underscores the importance of seeking a personal connection with God. “If you ever want a father you can depend on, He’s the one on high,” he asserts, illustrating his faith as a guiding force.
Letters Without Limits continues to honor the voices of patients through the creation of these meaningful letters.
