Sharon Kane’s “Haze” Poem Captures Love Amid Global Crisis

This week, poet Sharon Kane presents her latest work, “Haze,” which explores the juxtaposition of personal moments of love against the backdrop of pressing global crises. The poem reflects on environmental challenges while capturing a fleeting moment of intimacy, illustrating how love can persist amidst turmoil.

The poem opens with a stark reminder of the planet’s perilous state, stating, “The world is on fire and each summer the blazes get closer to us, but we are more likely to drown underwater.” This imagery evokes a sense of urgency, drawing attention to the escalating climate crisis that affects communities worldwide. Yet, within this heavy context, Kane introduces a moment of connection: “You kiss my lips and for a second I grow gills. I can swim.”

Kane’s work is notable for its exquisite brevity and straightforward language, allowing profound themes to resonate without overwhelming the reader. The poem culminates in a transformative moment that suggests the potential for transcendence even in bleak circumstances.

Currently residing in Portland, Sharon Kane is an emerging voice in contemporary poetry. She is featured in a collaborative publication titled Deep Water: Maine Poems, which is produced in association with the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. The collection highlights the diverse experiences of writers from Maine, focusing on themes that are deeply relevant to the region’s cultural and environmental landscape.

Megan Grumbling, another poet from Portland, has also contributed to this collection, which underscores the rich literary tradition of the area.
