Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by her husband, Clayton, and their daughters, Jennifer and Gwendolyn. Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to family and community.
Sally attended elementary and high school in Torrance, California, where she met her future husband, Clayton Mallard, in the tenth grade. Their love blossomed into a lifelong partnership, culminating in their marriage on August 5, 1956. Together, they celebrated nearly 70 years of marriage, nurturing a family that brought joy and warmth into their lives.
Throughout her life, Sally excelled in various roles, whether as a skilled seamstress, an accomplished cook, or a welcoming hostess. She had a gift for making everyone feel special and cared for, which was evident in her home life and the gatherings she orchestrated. The couple’s journey took them from Atlanta, Georgia, to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and ultimately back to Tustin, California, before retiring to Fallbrook, California, in 2002.
Community Engagement and Passions
Sally was deeply involved in her community and church, practicing kindness and thoughtfulness in all her interactions. She was a devoted bridge player, teaching others the game in Iowa and maintaining an active neighborhood group in Tustin. Even after moving to Fallbrook, she continued playing at the Fallbrook Senior Center until recently.
Her love for tennis blossomed later in life, and she joined the Fallbrook Tennis Club, where she formed lasting friendships with fellow members, including owners Dorothy and Russ Roth. Sally’s life was enriched by her family and friends, with highlights including the births of her four daughters, their weddings, and the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
One of the most memorable moments was celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary, where she gathered loved ones to honor her enduring love for family and Clayton. This celebration was further enhanced by a visit from Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who had lived with the family in 1976-77, underscoring Sally’s lifelong connections.
A Legacy of Love
Sally leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. She is survived by her husband, Clayton Mallard; daughters Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry); as well as grandchildren Spencer, Anastasia, Taylor, Dylan, Amanda, Farren, Nicolette, and Rachel. She also cherished her great-grandchildren Londyn, Pharaoh, and Treasure, along with her three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook for family and friends to honor her life. Sally Ann Sprout Mallard will be remembered as a vibrant and loving soul who touched the hearts of many, and her presence will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
